Guzzi Kindle Book
« on: January 25, 2015, 07:26:53 AM »
Hello Folks,

Pardon the spam.  I have just consolidated all my motorcycle adventures (such as they are - many of which were serialized here) from the last few years as a Kindle book.

"Canada is blessed with thousands of kilometres of empty roads which seem to wind on forever through forested hills and between still blue lakes.
What better way to explore them than by riding 40 year old Italian motorbikes, famous for their dodgy electrics and sparse dealer network.
40 year old bikes, aged rider, thousands of kilometres of virtually unserviced empty roads in the middle of bear, wolf and blackfly infested wilderness - what could possibly go wrong?"

Here's the link to Amazon.com http://tinyurl.com/otgbgqs (added 29th Jan/15 - thanks Lee!)

Here's a link to Amazon.ca
http://www.amazon.ca/Beyond-Coffee-Shop-motorcycles-Northern-ebook/dp/B00SPCR490/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422191403&sr=8-1&keywords=nick+adams

Having no idea about these things, I've priced it at about $8US ($9.59CDN)

Hmmm, I get "pricing not available" and "this item not available in your country"  ??? I'll try on the Kindle itself.

I want to buy it, but how can i make sure i can read it with out a kindle? i have a kobo, it reads .epub, like every none kindle in the world.

Will it let me just download the .mobi file and i can then convert to .epub with Calibre?

Kindle offers a 'free' app for download: I guess they figured out how much of the market didn't own a Kindle device.
(Monopolies are only fun if everyone wants to play with that toy: ask any dog or kid)
There is also OverDrive, a US company, that leases/sells eBooks to libraries. They also offer a free app that can access .epub files.
Hope that Nick gives OD a call so libraries can also share his book.

The tech mobi, kindle, epub stuff is beyond me. Sorry, I can't help much.
I wrote the basic file in HTML, but what Kindle turns it into foreign territory.
I know it works on my Android phone (I was my first customer!  ???) and the Kindle KDP 'preview'
thingy for authors shows that it will work (with various degrees of success) on a variety of devices.

Don't sweat it though.  Anyone who had followed any of my trips here, will already have seen most of it.

No matter how many times you go through it, you only notice the mistakes after it's published.

Ignore the occasional redundant word and for 'Sagina' read 'Saguenay', 'Brava' read 'Breva' etc. - darn spellcheckers!

Certainly worth the $6.00 (US) that Amazon charged me! It is quite entertaining. I'm going to pull out some Canadian road maps just to get a better idea of the travels described.

Finished it now , what a good read  ;-T . Thanks for taking the effort to put all of that together. Loved the the photos. Explain to me "Frost Heaves" on the roads, I have this idea that the moisture freezes under the road pushing it up , is that right ?

Ron,
As you said, the moisture in the gravel beneath the road freezes, expands, and heaves the road surface.  It seems worst in the spring as the frost starts to leave the ground (I don't understand the mechanics of this, but it is the bane of road maintenance crews).

As for bears - no need to worry.  Far more chance of being hit by lightning.  Now, if there were blue ringed octopi, brown snakes and redback spiders everywhere, I'd be scared to get out of bed.

The link drops you at Amazon.ca and won't allow purchase if you have a US amazon account, as indicated:

We're sorry, we could not complete your purchase.

Your Kindle account is registered at Amazon.com. To shop for Kindle titles available for your country, please shop at Amazon.com

So.......I copy/pasted the title at my U.S. account and bought the book!  Not too hard.  Here's the link for us south of the border:

I shortened the link with a tiny URL.....a nice tool for incredibly long links

Cheers!

Lee

On edit: Forgot to mention, bought the eBook, no issues on my US account. Just read the preface, can't wait to get into the book.  Looks like Nick captured all those thoughts that fly around inside our helmets on the long, long moto trips :-).

Hi all, have tried to review the book on Amazon but it gives me an " Authentication error "
And I so wanted to say how bad it was........ Joking Nick  :D   I thought a Daytona would satisfy my desires but now I find myself looking at old eldorado's and stelvio's.
It's all your fault nick, but I will forgive you if you can help convince my wife I need another bike  :D

Very good read.  Impressive riding & wrenching.  I especially appreciated descriptions of thoughts (or lack) on road trips.  Only nit to pick: spellcheck is not the same as proofing -- I just learned to think "carbs" when I saw "cars".

Agreed, finally got to open the book this morning......most excellent stuff!!!  Spell check aside, thoughts, feelings and challenges are very well captured.  Neat, that I share the pangs and doubt's on the beginning of each long trip...only to dispell them as my first ever Guzzi......soaked it all in and just kept on motoring, every trip, every day.

Still reading, and riding vicariously through your trips.

Good stuff!!!
