I was a little nervous when anticipating retirement a few years ago, but it turned out that retirement is the best job I ever had. Congratulations.

Good news!

I have to say that I'm as busy as ever in retirement, but the stress level is much more tolerable.

I do miss flying and may go back to gliders next summer. Or find an ultralight.

I would consider an ultralight if I did not live in Kansas due to winds. I have flown one once years ago and it was kind of a hoot.

Closed my kitchen showroom and design business at the end of 2013. I call myself semi-retired as I still do a little consulting and part-time work. I still stay incredibly busy, but without the pressures of owning a business. My wife retires at the end of the year and we plan to travel extensively. Both of our health is good and I see continuing good and better times ahead. Going to be an adventure.

My last day is this Friday, Jan 30  ;D. I will retire (voluntarily) from my company and get a reduced pension because I am almost 57. I will also have to purchase Obamacare since I am not yet of Medicare age - that was the scariest part!  Starting a small business, that will keep me busy, and I have the pension as a fallback.

Same here, that is going to hurt some. I will be 60 in August and my wife is 61 so we will have to pay out for a few years.

Your employer doesn't offer the company healthcare plan for retirees?

Check with your local Area Agency on Aging for supplemental plans for health care. From what I gather, Affordable Health Care plans only do part of the job (same with Medicare) and AAA can be a big help in choosing (and seeing what is available).

I married a youngin' so I can mooch off her health plan until Medicare kicks in.  ;D

They do, but with my age being less than the target age of 65, I would only get 30% paid of the company plan (which is a cadillac plan), costing me $1400/mo. With Obamacare in NY, I got a silver plan for me and my wife at $713/mo.(no subsidy for us).

BTW, there may be plans outside of Obamacare in NY, but I could not find them. When you go to all the major insurance company websites, they will give you information but when it is time for purchasing they refer you to the healthcare.gov website.

WOW! I am just looking into it and here in central Kansas so far have a quote for a bronze plan at around $930 a month and the silver plan at over $1,300 a month. I would love that $713 quote. If I stay on my work group plan it will be nearly $1,400.

Dog!

I've got 5 more years and I'm really tired of working without getting paid as it's been the last 4 years.  Life of a Business Owner

It will be a really long time with the yoke on when you consider 1970 to 2020.

I must have really sinned in a previous life because I am married to a (tennis) Junkie wife who "retired" a decade ago to do serve her "habit".  A trophy-wife-wanna-be.  It's Cheaper to Keep Her.

Still I know I'm much better off than those in the past.  It must have been really rough for those during the Dust Bowl or Great Depression when they were 60.

Thanks for update ....It does give me Hope and Envy.

Good for you, John. Thats what you call a "light at the end of the tunnel" Life is too short, its best to retire as soon as you can, so you can start "Livin" . Someone mentioned every day is a Saturday, yes at first it feels that way, but after a couple of years ,you will be busier than ever, but enjoying every minute of it. Retirement ,for us folks that have a bunch of hobbies is nirvana, but Ive seen a few guys that work was their life, their identity, they identified with, and when those type of folks retire, they are miserable, and usually kick the bucket much sooner than expected.
Congratulations on your upcoming retirement!  ;-T

John,

Most excellent of all news!

Oil crash is making my company and job increasingly dicey.  Window for me is somewhere between this summer (after youngest finishes college, and hopefully launches and gets off payroll) and latest around May, 2016.  Lots of my peers and cohorts have hung it up and tell me life is good in the slow lane.  What I want is TIME, time to do what I want.  No more commute.  No more all day on a computer seeking the elusive oil field.  No more Mr. Boss and Mr. Geologist that do nothing.  And on.  So, soon I will join you.  The psychological bridge is pretty long after nearly 4 decades of non-stop WORK, and corporate drudge.

A couple years ago I ran into a friend that worked on the Fire Dept. with me.  I asked him how he liked retirement and he told me, "I get up in the morning with nothing to do, at the end of the day I've only got half of it done."
