I Need Measurement on T3 Dipstick
« on: March 25, 2015, 05:42:59 AM »
The dipstick I have has home made marks on it for the low and high levels of oil in the sump on my T4. I would like to check if they are correct or not.

The measurements I am after are all to be taken from the underside of the cap that screws into the engine block.

The 1st measurement I am after is the one from the underside of the cap as in the attached picture to the end of the dipstick.

The 2nd measurement is from the underside of the cap to the FULL mark on the dipstick (about halfway down the dipstick).

The 3rd measurement is from the underside of the cap to the LOW mark on the dipstick (nearest the end of the dipstick).

Thanks for any help that can be given to me on this issue.

P.S. A point worth making is that the LM1, LM2, T3, Convert, G5, SP1 apparently use the same dipstick.
Also my T4 is completely standard. No sump extension, or anything else like that, that would require a longer dipstick. My dipstick is the same as the one shown in the picture.

4.5, 4.25, 3.0 (inches)

Thanks for the reply.

But the first figure should be the longest from under cap to end of dipstick. The 3rd measurement should be next longest from underside of cap to LOW mark and the 2nd measurement should be the shortest from underside of cap to FULL mark which is higher than the LOW mark.

Are your last two figures the wrong way around. thanks

I found this earlier post by departed user crc:

http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=48470.msg725092#msg725092

He said, "Ive got a T3 dipstick here and I think it would be the same as a Convert, it measures 65mm to the full mark and 96.5mm to the low mark and 103mm to the bottom of the stick."

Converting Charles's measurements to metric gives: 114mm, 108mm, 76mm. Each of these is 11mm longer than a measurement from crc. Could be Charles has a stick for an extended sump? (And presumably an extended sump too.) EDIT -- Or maybe crc measured from the bottom of the threaded stock instead of from the bottom of the rim.

I just looked without success for my original T3 stick, which I replaced when I put on a sump extension. I'll look again later if the issue is still unresolved.

BTW, this business of OEM marks is regarded as not too important by many. They would recommend filling the sump with specified quantities and then marking the stick from the observed levels. (But you probably knew that.)

why all the fuss. change the oil, put in the proscribed amount, and then see where the oil level is on your stick, and mark it. you could even mark it so you could measure on the side stand, or screwed in or not screwed in... your choice... just recently changed the oil, and don't want to change it to do this "trick". ask your self these questions, does your bike smoke, does it require oil between changes, does it leak? If you can answer no to all of those, then you can do the "trick" right now...

there is no difference. I measured mine from the top of the threads. He measured them from the bottom of the threads.

Very appropriate subject - the dipstick on my 04 EVT has separated i.e. the stick portion has fallen out of the screw-in portion.

I have both parts, but am unsure how to re-attach them.  I'm not happy with just putting the stick back in the hole without something to make sure it doesn't come apart again.  I consider myself lucky that the stick (which had fallen inside the sump) didn't do any damage.

What say you?  An epoxy?  JBWeld? Sillycone?  Duct tape?

TIA

Thanks guys for the replies - all valuable.

The issue arose when I checked my oil the other day and it was just showing on the bottom of the dip stick. I replaced my oil filter and cleaned out the sump with oil change just over a year ago. I don't know what  mileage has been covered in this time. The filter change was at 70,000km. Logbook is at home - I am at work.

The motor does not blow any smoke, the compression on both cylinders is between 170 and 180 psi. The motor has no oil leaks. Yet it has used some oil I guess for the dip stick reading to be so low.

Is it normal for these old motors to use oil between oil changes and if so how much is acceptable?

I will give it an oil change and do the "trick" to check level on dip stick. How much oil does the motor take with just a straight drain and refill, not replacing the oil filter?

Thanks

Particularly Charles

Depending on your model, around 3 liters. I have found it is always better to run a guzzi 1/2 quart low, prevents blow by. But for the purposes of calibration, put in 3 qts...

Thanks for the measurements guys. I measured mine and have now been able to work out which marks I should use to obtain the correct level of oil in the sump (dipstick I mean). There are three lines on my dipstick and obviously the middle line is for the oil level 1 liter (1 qt) below full as suggested above.

I also checked the speedo reading and 5,000km has been covered since the last oil change. So I guess it needs another one soon.

Can anyone tell me if it is normal to use oil between oil changes?

Thanks
Cheers
