Yep and we are on 50 hour weeks. I just finished week 2. 100 hours down 200 to go. It's funny because every day is a contradiction. One day it's go faster. The next is slow down. Drive to the top of the hill today drive across the side of it tomorrow. Wait to see where he wants the load dumped. Dump the load and keep moving he has a dozer he can move it if he needs to. My reply to all has been sure thing boss I can do that. It would have drove a younger me crazy but I know it's not my job to ask why but to just do as I'm asked. The other day it was funny we were running like clock work I would pull up to get loaded just as the other guy was pulling away. Then the boss tells me to speed up. Now I'm dumping my load in the wrong places and sitting parked waiting for the guy in the other truck to get loaded. I went faster but the production went slower. Hey not my place to think about stuff like that. Boss man says drive fast I get to driving. Turns out for 25 an hour I can keep my mouth shut and do as I'm told. I never would have thought me to be a yes man but that's what they bought. Most of my job vocabulary has been sure thing boss I can do that.

As far as the operators union I just finished my second week of work. 10 hour days no breaks no lunch and dangerous conditions. Saw the other haul truck driver roll his bed once and the whole truck almost went over a second time. I have had a few close calls but so far so good.
used to just rag on unions until I learned about how this process worked - before, I thought it was just all Mafia, baseball bats, and long breaks.

The union makes sure that qualified, reliable people are up climbing 100' in the air and erecting steel and working on 480v stuff, NOT half-drunk carnival workers. The safety supervisor on the job is hired by the union and responsible to them to make sure everyone's working safe. Think of all the inaccurate anti-union statements, posts and thoughts you've made all these years, getting yourself all worked up... often pissing off those who abide by forum rules. Yadda X 3
