Hey guys

My 2011 V7 Classic has been showing an Intermittent Check Engine Light and running rough the past few days. It's only got 3800kms on it. Last year the dealer reset something when it was running rough. Any idea if this would be related and maybe something that needs to be completed again? The light goes on and off like every 5-10 minutes and the bike hesitates/sputters and is not smooth at all.

Thanks

Have you tried reseating connectors on the ECU or the engine sensors (oxygen, engine temp)?  Use a spray cleaner like Deoxit to remove possible corrosion and leave a protective film on the contacts.  It is possible that the dealer reset the TPS when you had it in for service.  PM me if you're in Toronto with the bike.

I recall there were two tech bulletins about reducing the check engine light.  One was a map change, the other re-routing wiring.

I don't think this is your problem,  because you have performance issues as well as the light, but I'm throwing it out there.

I'll see if I can dig up the bulletins.

I think the bulletins were related to Baby Breva?

That's possible.  The bulletins date from 2008 and 2010.

And it's not a " baby Breva."  It's the svelte light weight Breva.

My 2010 V7C started running rough and the engine light illuminated right before the connector from the alternator to the regulator melted.

I thought this and checked those bulletins when he first posted this thread yesterday. They are dated 2008 and 2009. One was for the Nevada and one for the V7C. However since his bike is at least one production year later than the latest bulletin I didn't post them because I WOULD HAVE HOPED EVEN THE GUZZI FACTORY WOULD HAVE FOLLOWED THEIR OWN BULLETINS AFTER A YEAR OR SO!

So, I did what Pete suggested and I changed the plugs, added some fuel injector cleaner, threw in some fresh plugs, and took it for a ride. The one plug was very black. Looks like it's not firing properly or running rich on that side. The dealer said a coil wire was kinked. when he lifted the tank the other day, but he adjusted it.

Anyhow, after doing the above the bike is still running rough (more so when the engine light comes on) and the light is still coming on and off.

I'm stumped here....don't wanna have to head back to the dealer unless I have to.

Here's a shot of the plugs.

Like Pete suggested, you need to data log it somehow and see what is happening WHEN the fault occurs.

Hmmm, ;D

Think the sparkplug is black due to misfire from not getting spark? Maybe a wire or coil issue?

Let me check my other arm.   ;D

Yes - spark is very likely weak or intermittent and probably due to the dealer unkinking that coil wire. It is very tight under the tank and reinstalling the tank might have easily - very easily snag on the now unkinked wire or a coil connector or even plugging a spark plug wire got loose at the spark plug cap. You will have to check the components one at a time - start with the easiest to get to first before having to pull the fuel tank.

The early V7 Classics would misfire when cold - not good for island ferry disembarkation. I eventually put in Iridium spark plugs and NGK spark plug caps on my V7Classic and I think it ran a little better after that.

Good luck - shouldn't be hard finding the shocking truth!  ;-T

Thanks for the tips. Looks like I'll be checking some wires and connections later today.

Any idea if resetting the TPS or a throttle body sync would help this issue?

I'm still learning my way around this newer bike with all of it's electronics

This problem is still on-going. My dealer had the bike for a couple of days last week and checked the following:

•Spark plug boots and wires
•Ignition coil
•Injectors (just checked voltage I believe)

They thought it was fixed and then 5-minutes from the shop, the light came on and the bike began running rough. It only runs rough when the light comes on. As a result they tried a few other things:

•Swapped in a new o2 sensor (didn't make a difference)
•Left side muffler was showing heat spots (swapped that, but no difference)
•Swapped in a new ECU (reset TPS, etc, and no difference)
Still having the issue with an intermittent check engine light, which is coming from the left side. The bike runs okay when the light is not on.

Tonight I am going to swap the injectors from side to side to see if this makes any difference and to rule out the injectors. Any other thoughts?

It sounds like most of the obvious suspects have been checked.  At this point, the injectors or an intermittent, faulty, injector relay could be a possibility.

Swapped the injectors last night one side to the other last night and found my issue.....fuel injector. The fouling of plugs and rough running has now switched to the side with the shitty injector.

Just need to grab a new injector now

Thanks for all of your help!

Well done! Nothing like the satisfaction of logical troubleshooting! Sad your dealer was incapable.

That's GREAT news!  Unfortunately, Guzzi has too few dealers that are competent to diagnose these types of problems.  Good work!

Good you found the problem.  Get your injector cleaned at a local shop instead of buying new. Any diesel shop should be able to do the job; http://www.performancediesel.ca/ is one such shop in Markham (Woodbine/Steelcase).  Should only cost $20.00 or so.

I'm new to Guzzi's so I'm curious.  Wouldn't the system store a trouble code when the light comes on, to give you a place to start?

Thanks rbm. I've been in touch with this Giles who runs the shop and plan on dropping both injectors off to performance diesel.
