1981 Moto Guzzi V1000 G5
« on: July 13, 2015, 10:33:37 AM »
Just showing off the finished project of my 1981 Moto Guzzi V1000 G5. I'll add some more pics and details of the work later-on, but this photos is from the bike's Maiden Voyage on Saturday to a friends house after a full frame-off restoration. It took about 4 months, lot's and lots of hours, a good chunk of change, great help from you guys here on this forum, and a ton of snacks brought to me by my girlfriend when I was basically living in the garage to do this. My goal was to keep the bike as close to factory as possible and period correct, while personalizing to my liking just enough to call it mine.

Enjoy.

Resto's are always such a fantastic feeling of accomplishment aren't they. Some people get it, some don't.

Great job, first of many I hope as it appears you have a talent for it.

Good way to break in the GF BTW. Let her know now where your priorities are :)

Looks nice. I'm just getting started on my '76. I was planning on making a replica of the endurance race bike that was campaigned for a couple of years. After seeing how many irreversible mods I would have to make I've decided to just trim it down a bit. First thing I did when I got it up on the lift is remove all that shift linkage and make a nice little knob to change from high to low directly off the gearbox. The left front caliper is frozen. Got one piston out and polished it on the lathe but the other side is proving difficult. One perseveres.

Thanks Guys. After seeing many great restorations on this site, I just didn't have a choice but follow suit

I'm not very good at documenting before and after photos because I get in a zone and don't want to mess with the camera much, but I will have some within the next few days. I have a lot of before shots I took for evaluation purposes when I first got the bike, and I'll try and match the same spots & angles for the afters (similar to the coils photo below). In the meantime, here is another photo taken by our Scioto River around sunset. The next photo of the bike (in blue) is how the bike was the day I got it at an estate auction last year (June 2014) - I've posted that one here at some point.

Coils Area - Before / After

As purchased in June 2014

I'll edit and post full specs of materials used (paints, polishes, etc.) to the original post once I clear up a little more time.

I'm no expert, but have owned several Tonti Guzzis of the area, and when I looked at yours, it looks to me like a stock bike, so you've done well on "customizing" it to meet your desires while sticking with the spirit of an '81 Guzzi.

Hope it runs for years and years and hundreds of thousands of miles for you.   You deserve it after all that!

My main riding partner rolls on a '81 G5.....so I have a decent frame of reference, unlike many of the models on display here which I've not had a chance to get cozy with.

Man, you did a fantastic job, made better by the fact that you plan to RIDE it. I'll be watching for more photos.

Cheers.

I know this is several years later, but that is an awesome looking bike! I have a '79 Moto Guzzi V1000 G5 that I would really like to restore to pretty much exactly what you have there. One great looking Moto Guzzi, great job!!!

Yeah, my reply is four years old - but that is one NICE G5!

I am wondering, but is that Dark Smoky (sic) Metallic (Quartz) - the Italver Maserati colour from the '80's?

I am a bit partial to that colour, as my '85 850 T5 NT is that colour.

Oh, um...  I'm not particularly proud of how I decided to carry the extra helmet that day.  It did not fall off... but it should have, with that stupid methodology.  I chock it up to this being some considerable years ago...

Until then ride and enjoy what you have since it’s not to shabby as-is. Missing tank logo and damaged seat are quick fixes.

Agreed, both bdmitche's G5 and Cdn850T5NT's T5 look great the way they are! In regards to the color on my G5, that is a 2015 Ford color called Magnetic Metallic, color code is J7. It's used on a lot of Fords out there from 2015 and newer and showcases best I think on their trucks and the Mustang.

It was actually hard to choose from the millions of nice metallic gray colors out there! For a few months I obsessed looking for the right one in all different types of lighting. In my eyes, the one I used has the right amount of "earthiness" in the color tone that I think worked best with the earthiness tone in the SS fenders, and would go well with the oil and brake dust "tint" that happens over time on our engines and wheels. It has a warmer tone, versus some grays that have a cold tone to them that would maybe work better with chrome. I used a ceramic enamel Stainless Steel paint for the lowers and fork triples (Dupli-Color Stainless Steel SS100 & Clear DE-1636), and then another Stainless Steel type paint for the rims tying it all together (Eastwood Brake Gray Epoxy Paint with real SS pigment in it, #11756Z). As I said, I obsessed over the paint job  :azn: ... as I'm sure so do others when it comes time to making that commitment!

In the case of the T5, I think you'd have a lot more options because your fender is painted to match and the rear is black.

Thanks for the compliments, and I hope that helps!

... and another pic for the fall season

Hey, those are Convert bars, my favorite! I rode my first Convert with those bars for years, and I still say the ergonomics of that seat/bar/footboard combo (same between Convert and G5) are as comfortable as you can get!

Thankyou for that detail, Groover.  It was, for sure, a carefully chosen colour!

StratoGuzzi:  your SP1000 looks great.  I like SP's, SPII's!

Related to Groover's G5 - I am wondering about the (front) crashbars you have on your bike (and please, Others, kindly jump in, too):

i) I have the type of crashbars that are evident on the red Guzzi....

ii) I see on your Guzzi, you have the wider, Convert / G5 / Police bars; these are the ones I want to consider for my 850T5NT...

iii) the wide bars on the G5 - what is the max width of said bars, roughly speaking (pls and thx!)?

iv) are the G5 bars ONLY available to mount on Tonti frame Guzzi's with floorboards... or Guzzi's with the police-style long stand? (mine does not have floorboards, and per the photo, has the smaller stand that mounts considerably farther rearward, compared to the earlier short-stand Guzzi's);

v) are the bars on the G5 mounted the standard way?  Is there a kind of pin that is used, and that must be bought separately to mount the lower parts of the bars; and re the upper part of the bars - the mounting - will they work on any Tonti - or must a special plate be obtained, first?; and lastly

vi) what are the air deflectors for... i.e. for what reason are they used?

Sorry, lots of questions.

My wish is to get these wide bars, and to also get some wide bars at the rear.  The reason:  to protect the silencers (and to some degree, the cylinders), when the inevitable parking lot spill occurs.

Thx!

TIA, All.
