V7 Clutch adjustment Right??
« on: November 26, 2015, 06:43:57 PM »
I have a V7 Racer. Did the 5000 mile service.
This is how I adjusted the clutch. Please advise if I did any thing wrong.
1. Took all of the tension out of the clutch cable by screwing the cable adjuster in toward the lever.  Zero tension.
2. I went to the rear of the bike and loosened the 13mm lock nut on the clutch arm.
3. I turned the small slotted adjustment screw in "clockwise one quarter turn. It felt "seated".  I apply no more force after one quarter turn. This screw turns, but certainly has some resistance to it.
4. I then retighten the lock nut on the clutch arm, securing the adjustment screw in place.
5. Went back to the clutch leaver and took all of the slack out of the clutch cable by screwing the adjustment screw out away from the lever. I left a few MM of free play at the lever. I used the lock ring to secure the adjustment screw.
6. Put the bike in neutral an rolled it. No clutch drag.
7. I put the bike in gear and pulled in the clutch lever and rolled it. No clutch drag.
The clutch lever feel exactly as the new bikes in the dealer show room in term of lever travel, play and tension. I went to the dealer and checked seven new bikes.

Here is my concern. There is very little to no adjustment left at the handle bar. The adjustment screw is nearly all of the way out away from the handle bar. Secure and stable, but with maybe six threads holding the screw in place. Bike runs fine with no clutch slippage. Shifts fine as well.
Can you remove cable slack at the back end at the clutch arm? I did not feel any means? Is it normal to have little or no lever adjustment at the bar with the clutch properly adjusted? What if anything did I do wrong??

Yup, turn in the handlebar adjuster until its just under halfway out. then get back down under the bike, loosen the locknut and wind the adjuster screw in until it seats, lock up locknut, go back up to the handlebar and adjust for free play.

Thank you. I appreciate your time and answer.  I was surprised how little of the cable adjustment screw is left at the handlebar in the lever, once properly adjusted. It seems clutch  wear is taken out or adjusted out by the rear screw in the clutch arm.  Hopefully this is a moderate to every 5000 mile event if not abused.

You shouldn't have to go to the clutch arm adjustment (on the tranny) until you run out of freeplay/adjustment at the lever on the bars.  Just dial it in at the hand lever to find the friction point.  Having said that, I have heard of a few bikes not being set up properly where adjusting the hand lever isn't enough.

My Breva is similar to the Racer. I have even removed some of the free play in the lever by packing it a bit simply so that my short fingers can actually reach the lever, so adjustment in my case is absolutely critical.  I set it up from new, and as yet at over 16,000 miles I have yet to touch the clutch arm.  All movement (and there has been very little has all been able to be taken up on the lever.

Wear seems to be very moderate indeed.
