This video really brings out how small that plane really was. Considering what all the design accomplished, many bows to the designers.

As SED mentioned, I had always thought the Merlin 76/77 engines were equipped for counter-rotating props (if not in the engine, then in the gearbox).

It's also rather odd to see a famously wooden aircraft painted to appear aluminum skinned!

One of the most amazing things I think about the Mozzi was the bomb load it could carry.

Anyway I'm super pleased that Avspecs have gone ahead with a second one. Hopefully they will build more.

Thanks for that johnr, It's a great thing these guy's do preserving history like that! I especially enjoyed the second vid with the Mosquito and P 38 together. Go figure

I remember a long thread on a WWII site about which was the better plane; the P-38 or the Mosquito. Apparently the P-38 had a max bomb load about equal to the Mosq.

It is hard to tell the direction the props are turning due to the frame rate of the video.
That's why they appear to change direction, and also why the appear to spin way slower than they actually are.

What is puzzling me is that there is only 5 exhaust stacks per side of engine nacelle, should be 6 for a V12.

Actually, it's easy to tell - just look at the pitch of the props before the engines are started.

Hey Kirby,
What the reasons for not counter rotating? Always remember reading about p-38 having counter rotation and single engine planes turning harder one direction than the other (esp. Dr.1 and others with Rotary engine) so thought counter rotation was to make it nimble in turns in either direction.

For an individual who won it maybe. Certainly the company wouldn't qualify for a Lotto profits handout. Those don't go to commercial enterprises.

I seem to recall that the P38s for the RAF order were not contra-rotating-maybe the Merlin in the Mosquito didn't have an easy way to reverse like the Allisons?

First the mossi was a bomber and although it was as fast or faster than any of the fighter aircraft at the time it would not turn with any of them so its turning ability was not important.

Kirby-I wikipedia'd it, the RAF ordered non-contras, that were known as P-322s, I guess. And oddly the P38 had the engines rotating outward (using the top of the prop as reference).

I recalled this now-useless information reading the biography of Robin Olds.

They have a third mossie underway. I think this one has been packed up and shipped already. They had stored it in the warbirds hanger whom had a open day so you could walk around it and a few of the others they had in the hanger. It is impressive up close and the hanger they had it in had a mezzanine floor so you could also look down on it as well. Got a few good photos
