Half Plastic Fuel Filter in 2013 V7 Stone
« on: March 04, 2017, 01:09:21 PM »
I had the tank off anyway, so I went ahead and replaced the OEM fuel filter.

My 2013 Stone did have the controversial half plastic/half metal filter.

On the other hand, after 3.5 years of service and almost 50,000 miles, the original filter looked just fine.  Plastic was not budging or soft, and everything seemed sturdy and intact.

I went ahead and replaced it with an all metal filter.   But given my own experience, this half plastic filter issue may not be worth fretting about.

I concur. I believe I posted when I changed mine (had tank off to do the regulator anyway) the I managed to pressurize the more than 3 y/o filter with more than 100 psi and it didn't separate.

That may be, but IF it does fail, the bike won't run...period.  Why not upgrade while one is already in the tank?

I changed out the half-plastic filter on my '13 Stone, because back then there seemed to be a bit of panic on the forum about separating filters leaving riders stranded.  But the panic has since died down, and no more than one or two cases of separating filters were ever documented, so I'm leaving my '16 Stone alone.  I don't even know what kind of filter it has installed.  No problems at 13,500+ miles.

And mine on the '10 V7C still seemed to be working well when I changed to the metal tank at 164,000km.

At this point I suspect we've proven that the filters will not fail unless there's a defect, which in essence means your argument could be used to suggest replacement of anything on the bike from the ECM to the fuel pump prophylactically because "if they fail..."

Perhaps, but when the chance of pregnancy is infantismally small (think Clinton scandal) they're wholly unnecessary.

Malik:

You need to stop wasting time on the Guzzi forum and go ride your small block.   Only 164,000 km?  Pathetic!

Go find your keys, wash the cobwebs off the bike, and get that little Guzzi back on the road!

It has been assumed for some time that the additives in fuel, (ethanol), play a big part in the degradation of the plastic. I would **guess** that different blends will have varying effects. That being said, it is also entirely possible that the composition of the plastic part of the filter has also changed since they first came on the scene, IDK.

Early on, the filter I removed from my Norge was so soft and pliable that I was actually surprised it had not separated.  That was 2 years old and 11K miles at the time. It was very soft and bulging out.

In any event, you roll the dice and take your chances. Do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

What John Henry sez.. my 07 Norge was ready to fail, too. About 10K miles.

My 06 Breva 1100 filter looked fine after 3+ years of ethanol.

IIRC i thought I read the the manuf of that filter (Mehle?) "said"  that model filter (OEM in V7) was not specked for ethanol.

That was a topic of conversation at the 2015 National in New Hampshire.  When I got back I had Hamlin Cycles check my filter and indeed it was the half plastic one...yellow, swollen and  mushy. Replaced at 1500 miles.
