Starting a new thread on this.  Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.

The gathering is set for the Ouray KOA, Sept. 7-10 (the nights of  9/7-9/9).  The proprietress, Deborah, will take your reservation at 970-216-4009.  They have both cabins and tent sites available.  TELL HER YOU ARE WITH THE MOTO GUZZI GROUP, and she will put us together as best she can.  She recommended making a reservation soon as they are already booking up for Sept.
Spread the word and I look forward to seeing many of you there!  Here is their info, but call the number above if you are calling soon, as they are currently closed.

I plan to organize/lead 2 rides as part of the WG Western Adventure.

On Friday Sept. 8, we will head south from Ouray on the "Million Dollar Highway" to Durango, crossing Red Mountain, Coal Bank and Molas passes.  We then loop west and return over Lizard Head Pass to Telluride and then over the spectacular Dallas Divide, through Ridgeway and returning to Ouray.  This loop is about 225 miles total and is considered by many to be the most beautiful drive in Colorado.  An option for those with Stelvios or a penchant for dirt is to take Last Dollar Road from Telluride back toward the Dallas Divide.  A shortcut through huge Aspen groves.

On Saturday Sept. 9, we will ride northwest on Colorado highways 145 and 141 to Gateway.  This ride is completely different, through a red rock canyon more reminiscent of Utah than Colorado, but a great road and beautiful scenery.  In Gateway, we will have lunch and visit the Gateway Auto Museum.  For those who are not familiar with this museum, it is spectacular!  Not huge, but all of the cars are beautifully restored and displayed in a manner than makes this the best car museum I have ever visited.  We will then complete the loop, returning via US 50 and 550 through Delta and Montrose.  This loop is about 250 miles, but the roads are generally faster than the Friday ride.

I will prepare maps and itineraries for these rides.  Those wishing to only do a portion of the ride are welcome to join for as long as you wish, but I am hoping many of you will want to join me.

Might see you guys on 9/9...we'll be heading down from Steamboat to Telluride via Ouray naturally on the morning of the 9th.  Good chance we'd run into some folks unless everyone is leaving early on the 9th...all those roads are great ones....hopefully there is no construction on 550 like last summer.

Alan. You might take a look at the latest Rider magazine.

They've got the 550 loop, 50, 145, 149 and 160.  Photos and all.

I rode to Salida via Durango, north on the Million Dollar Highway, stopping in Ouray for lunch (and not finding any. Where I wanted to eat was closed between 2 and 5 pm) then onto Montrose .

A right turn there took my over Monarch Pass then down into Salida. I would need to have the breadth of vocabulary equal to Shakespeare to be able to describe the beauty of that ride!

I'm thinking about making this event. Would be coming from San Francisco. Looks like it will be a good time.

Alan,
Do you have a cabin number or tent site number where most will be staying at the Ouray KOA. For those of us who want to look on the map.

Thanks,
Rich

I'm planing on doing the COBDR in that time frame, but haven't set a firm date for the start.  Guess I'll have to reverse plan so I can be there at least for one night!

So, will alanp:
  • Ride his brand new but everybody-knows-a750-is-too-small-to-tour-on black V7-II to Ouray, or,
  • Will he succumb to the silky-smooth-but-numb charms of his FJR mile-destroyer?

I say:
  • In the event of (1) that we always keep a free beer in Alan's hand to reward his "sacrifice."
  • In the event of (2) then Alan owes all of us a free beer to atone for his transgression.

Any votes?

If you'd like some company on the way out shoot me a PM.  I'll be leaving from Clovis Ca. My plan is to ride to 4 corners, start the COBDR and end up in Ouray sometime over the 4 days everyone will be there.  I'm figuring that I should be in Ouray on day two of the COBDR. And of course, if you would like to do the whole BDR you'd be welcome. If not, I've always wanted to ride with another Guzzi... :thumb:

I doubt that having been to the Ouray KOA a few years ago and also owning a 750 Breva.   We're talking 8-9K' altitudes here.  True, on that trip I didn't have my Breva, but still the altitude makes a big difference on smaller motors.  Now if I had been on my Suzuki VX800 there wouldn't have been any issue.

There are many roads to Ouray, Colorado, USA.

This map may be of help to those underprivileged riders who do not know their way around Colorado.
Ouray is #9 on the map.

Ouray is a great town to enjoy...anything down by the Uncompaghre is sweet...even the campground above the town is a fantastic place to camp with great views of the town.  The many 4x4 trails running thru there, Imogene over to Telluride, Black Bear (the hard way to Telluride), Ophir Pass from Silverton to Telluride, the Alpine loop - hitting Engineer Pass, Poughkeepsie Gulch and many of the high alpine lakes are fantastic trails to run...even if you don't have a Stelvio set up with offroad tires or BDR experience on a moto, take the time to rent a jeep for a day and enjoy getting into the back country.

As the days get closer, we'll see if we can camp that night on 9/9 at the KOA or somewhere else in town before heading over to Telluride for the week...
