V7 II 1200 mile report
« on: March 29, 2017, 06:11:36 PM »
1. It is very happy cruising at 85 MPH (typical speed on interstate 15, leaving north from Las Vegas)...plenty of throttle left and does not feel overworked.
2. Goes fairly quick from roll-on sixth gear at 70 MPH to 90, even 95 while passing...although I can tell that it does not have the higher RPM HP of my 2012 Triumph Bonneville 865cc.
3. The Dart Marlin flyscreen keeps bugs off my jacket...but plenty accumulate on my face shield!
4. Had a 220 mile solo run to Pahranagat Lakes today and found out that 107 MPH is 6500 RPMs...still climbing a bit, but slowly.
5. Since the gearbox fluid was changed, no more puking out the vent...even after two hours of high speeds.
6. Cold and hot starts are great, since the dealer download.
7. Accidentally bumped rev limiter for first time, in first and then in second gear.   Was more intent upon traffic than gauges, but it was north of 7,000 RPM, perhaps 7200 or 7500?   Not a surprise and a quick shift recovered.
8. MPG at higher speeds and up grades was 48.   On the return, MPG was almost 54.
9. Love the 5.8 gallon tank, which may be handy for a trip in 2 weeks to Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley.
10. Zero buyer's remorse!   Only annoyance is clutch throw-out bearing noise at idle in neutral, clutch not pulled-in.   Other than that, I love the sounds and feel of this bike.
11. Pelican 1170 cases are working well for my day trips.
12. Tool kit under the seat handy.   Needed a 17 mm open wrench (stubby) to re-tighten my left mirror when I bumped it accidentally today.

Sounds good!  I just took mine in for the 600 mile service today.  Can't really comment on the high speed running, as I have mostly ridden on roads with 45 mph and lower limits, but I have thrashed it pretty hard up to 5000 rpm (or so) and it pulls real strong. I am getting right at 50 mpg.  The 6 spd tranny is really sweet.  Nicest shifting bike I think I have ridden.

I am getting a Dart screen and hope it reduces the wind pressure on my chest, which should be a big help on the highway.

The bike is surging badly at steady throttle.  Not sure what the issue is.  As long as I am accelerating or decelerating the engine seems very smooth, but it won't hold a steady throttle.

SportsterDoc, in your item 6 you mention "dealer download".  Is there a new map available?  I have a 2016 Stone.  If I can resolve the surging I won't have any remorse either, but need to get that fixed.  Otherwise, this is an exceptionally nice bike and fits my needs perfectly.

At the 600 mile service, the dealer should download the latest program, which eliminated extra lean cold and hot starts, for me. I think your surging is a lean issue.  I still get a little when cold, at 15 MPH in first gear.

The Dart Marlin took wind off my chest.

+1 for the 17 mm wrench. My mirror got loose half an kilometre from my dealers location when I got my Stone on March 15, 2013.

Some here mentioned the surging at their STB“s. Mine never had that issue. A thought: could it be the bikes are drawing bleed air? On mine I had to fasten the plastic parts of the intake manifold between throttle body and cylinder.

A few basic tools are handy
Quite a few can fit under the seat (the foam is to prevent the bag slipping forward over the air filter intake.
In addition to what is in the photo, that bag contains a 17 and 19 mm stubby combo and Irwin Visegrips 4LN

Pelican 1170 cases carry Seal N Air, compact footpump (German made, cannot find anymore) spare glasses, bungee, rag for bug removal on the left side.
Right side has water bottles, with some room to spare.
