Left earlier than normal this morning for a ride in the Spring Mountains, to hopefully avoid the 40% chance of heavy monsoonal rains predicted after 11 AM.
150+ miles up Kyle Canyon, across Deer Creek Road (65 F at 8500 feet), down Lee Canyon, up highway 95 to Cold Creek Road, up Cold Creek Road to the community of Cold Creek. Enjoyed seeing wild horses at the summit. Did the reverse for the return.
After lunch, I decided to change the fluids, for which I had intended to wait until the end of August, a ~5 month interval. First change was at 811 miles, ~3 weeks after purchase.
Today was 4,663 miles on the clock or only 3,852 miles since the first change, 5 months ago.
Measured fluids drained:
Engine: 2,000 cc of Motoul 7100 10/60
Gearbox: 450 cc of Motoul 75w90
Trans/hub: 175 cc of Castrol GL-5 85w140.
Engine fluid was darker than out of the bottle, but still Motoul red. No sediment in drain pan. Probably could have gone another 2,000 miles, per change schedule of 6,200 miles, but better if only another 1,000 miles for a 5,000 mile change interval, especially after many high speed runs and high ambient temperatures.
Gearbox fluid was very dark, but no sediment in the drain plug screen or drain pan. I am a skeptic about the recommended 37,300 mile change interval.
Trans/hub fluid was very dark, but no sediment in the drain pan. I am a skeptic about the recommended 12,400 mile change interval.
Probably will change all 3 at perhaps 9,000 miles on the odometer, ~ 4,400 miles from now.
Opinion: After first fluid change, consider 5,000 mile intervals for all three fluids.
