Break-in: a rather nice review of the issues
« on: August 12, 2017, 02:05:59 AM »
This is perhaps not quite as contentious as an oil thread, but I ran across one of the better articles I've ever seen on what happens during engine break-in, and what truth or myth may exist in what we all (think we) know. https://thumpertalk.com/articles/engine-break-in-truth-lies-and-what-you-really-need-to-know-r707/

There is a bit of a focus on the type of engine use specific to the motocross crowd; no surprise, since the audience is from Thumpertalk.com, a site for those into that sort of thing. I discovered them when I had my DRZ-400SM, and they (like AF1) show that a company sponsored site can still be a great source of independent information.

Take a moment to read the article and then post your reaction here. I'll be interested in the views other experienced engine builders, re-builders, restorers and just plain home garage types.

Thanks for this article. It makes a lot of sense and has some very good points. It certainly helps someone understand what is going on inside the engine. Although they did mention this, I would have wished they expound a bit with regard to Syn oils holding up better under severe conditions. Although the oil will thin under high heat conditions, the molecules will remain bonded together maintaining a film between bearing surfaces to a much greater degree.

Perfect example would be me getting out of Pittsburgh after the Vintage Gran Prix a few weeks ago. 4 lanes and no place to go. Several miles of stop and go traffic had the fan running on the oil cooler. Man, does that 1400 put out some heat under those circumstances! Never had any trouble, but I am glad there is synthetic oil in the crankcase. You just don't know what you may encounter out there.

A great suggestion that the answer lies in the middle of two extremes. Sums it up nicely in the last paragraph

Great topic and very glad you posted it.  Perfect timing for me as I have the new Stelvio due to arrive this coming week or next.  Meeting the driver (Haulbikes dba Daily Direct LLC) at a nearby truck stop and I plan to fill up there and "take the long way home" to the tune of a break-in ride, weather permitting.
