Title: New v85 rear drive leak
Post by: Gino on May 16, 2022, 04:22:45 PM
So my wife and I picked up a pair of v85’s last week, been running them in ready for first service this weekend, sadly my wife’s one started to leak from the rear drive at 550 miles ( that’s when I noticed it) both 2022 models so not old stock. A tad disappointed. We are of for a wee euro tour next week so it’s going anyway. First brand new road bike I’ve ever bought in the last 50 years. Bugger

Have you been able to determine the location of the leak?

Mine did the same thing.
It’s the seal on the splined pinion shaft. Not a big job.
Off with the bevelbox .
With mine, the seal came out VERY easily…too easily. It wasn’t a very good fit in the recess and fairly hard. I got the usual “have to wait on Piaggio for the warranty claim…”
My response was ..
“Bullshit…Just replace it and I’ll pay….”
I went next door for lunch and got a call half hour later, all done, 70 bucks.

I did not want to do it myself in case there was any damage done, at least this way they own the consequences.
That was 17,000 km back… :thumb:

Is the oil splattering around the rear tire in a radial pattern, take the fill level plug out, the one at 9 O'clock to see if its over-full.
Sometimes rain can enter the driveshaft tunnel through the flexible boot behind the gearbox, run down the shaft and into the rear drive over filling it.
Changing the oil in the rear end is part of first service.

There’s a little hole right at the end of the swingarm, close to the join with the bevelbox.
That’s where the condensation and swill can exit the casting.
See if there’s anything producing there.
Really though, it’s 10 minutes to have it off…(if you have a centrestand..)
You can stop guessing at that point.

Seriously mate, don’t ride it like that.
If it gets worse (and it will), you could end up welding the innards together, or worse still having an oil coating on the rear tyre with predictable consequences.
Just take it off and hoof it into your most trusted shop. It is not a big job.

My new v85tt had an apparent drive shaft leak as well.  I brought it in and my dealer checked it out.  He said that it had been over packed with grease from the factory.  Said the same thing happened a week before with another new one.  I’ve put about 150 miles on since without an issue.  I’m not mechanically inclined so I’m not sure exactly what overpacked with grease meant, but it turned out to be nothing.  Cadre cycle is my dealer in Cincinnati and I have 100% confidence in them.  You may want to call and ask them about the issue as it may pertain to your bike as well.

Seems that there have been equal numbers of bad seals and over filled rear drives. I would try lowering the gear oil in the pumpkin, clean things up, check the vent is not clogged and see where things go.

My new V7850 did the same. Oil splattered all over rear wheel and tire sidewall, which I noticed at about 300 miles. I drained the rear and refilled with correct amount of oil, problem gone. Now at 2200 miles, still good.

Overfilled from the factory ... common issue although I don't know why. Seems simple enough to fill correctly. My riding buddy had the same issue with his V7850.

Did you get the bikes fixed?  Was it simply an overfill issue?  Hopefully all is good and the two of you enjoy the tour.

Thanks for the replies, we have several old tontis so no stranger to a set of spanner’s. Both are booked in for the first service on Saturday so I guess after a discussion I’ll know what the options are. I’m not inclined to touch it while it’s under warranty, I have plenty other Guzzi’s and Nortons to take up my spannering time. I’ll let you know how it goes.

What I am hearing is that Moto Guzzi is generous with the rear drive oil.......yet stingy with grease.

On a different brand shaft drive bike I owned, the maintenance manual said "do not spin the wheel while filling, or you will overfill".  I watched the tech spin the wheel.

This is true of any shaft drive gearbox. Turning the wheel coats the gears and temporarily lowers the observable oil level. I made that mistake on my first shaft drive bike.

Originally the book called for 160-180 ml of gear oil in the rear drive.  Turns out anything more than 160 was too much.  Part of the recall was to drain fully and replace with 160 ml.  Even new from the factory some have been overfilled.  Make sure your dealer is aware of this.

Thank you for the reminder. First service will be due soon and the manual I downloaded still has 180 listed.

Only fill it until the oil runs out the level plug at 9 O'clock, that's what it's put there for.
There's often confusion between the gearbox and the transmission aka pumpkin.

MEASURE and fill.  The hole on the back (9 o’clock) is the FILL hole, top (12 o’clock) is the vent.

+1.  Been doing it this way last few changes.  No issues.

Drain it dry. Put in 160 and not a drop more.

Guess what, I put it in to the dealer and waited to be disappointed , I was, piaggio and their dealer network are poor. Nobody told me that if I put our bikes in for a service 30 miles before the service interval that the service light would come on 30 miles after. The mechanic told me a whole load of bullshit about the rear drive on my wife’s bike has found it’s level. A couple of years ago I’d have kicked his ass but really can’t be bothered. So after owning Guzzi’s and maintaining them for 40 years my opinion is do your own service and don’t listen to the salesman about what they can do for you. I would have been better buying 2 off the discount shops on eBay. And we are still waiting for my wife’s luggage@month after ordering it.
I like the bike, my wife also but don’t think I’d buy another new bike again.
