Breva 1100 oil leak, and living with it
« on: October 14, 2016, 04:20:00 PM »
I had a leak from the Phase sensor and what appeared to be from the main seal and oil pressure sensor. I upgraded to the NAPA oil pressure sensor, replaced the o-ring in Phase sensor and put a Harwall seal in the front main.

Now, I see a drop hanging under the timing cover and a little evidence it is coming from behind the timing cover and/or the Phase sensor. The leak from the Phase sensor seem almost no existent.
I have just a tiny bit of oil mist along the left side of the block. Nothing in the valley between the cylinders. Nothing on the oil pan yet. Oil pressure sensor looks good.

I ran the bike for an hour, so the seal should be bedded in. I'll keep an eye on this area and check oil frequently, but at this point I am done.

Just felt like venting.  :undecided:

Take half a cup of milk and throw it on the garage floor under your bike.  Do you still have an oil leak to fret over?  Didn't think so.

I already tried that and I don't have any fermented grape beverages in the house. Guess it will give me another reason to beautify it.

I did some searching on the web and found that the lips in the inside of the seal should be angled inward, towards the block. Simply pressing the seal in along the crankshaft will cause the lips to push in the wrong direction. This could explain why it only leaks when riding vs ideling. Has anyone used a tool that ensures the seal lips install inward? Could it remedy itself?

I used 10w-60 on shaft and inside of seal. The rest was dry. No sealant was used. I did not polish crank surface.

Next time, thinking of using assembly lube, polishing crank and using high grade sealant on outside of seal and mating surface.

It's possible that the old seal put a groove or other imperfection on the shaft. If the replacement seal is installed in the same place as the old one (and it probably is) it will still leak. Don't knock it fully home so the seal lip is on a different part of the shaft

Yep. There is a groove. Can feel it with fingernail.  The bike has just over 11k miles. I'll take a picture of the current depth of the seal for my reference. I think if the seal is pressed flush with the cover that should do it.

Do I need to use sealant and assembly grease?
