Title: sudden change on blue pipes on 2013 V7 Stone
Post by: slowmover on April 18, 2015, 06:11:27 PM
So I've read all the discussion on the pipes turning blue 5 inches or so coming out of the engine and I know I'll eventually give up hurting my elbows working them with Blue Job.It hasn't been that big an issue for the last 2 years, after every 150 miles or so I'd go out there to smoke a cigar, get away from da wife and deal with them. But all of a sudden this year they turn intensely discolored after just a couple of miles where it used to be a gradual change.I don't notice any change in the way it runs so I don't suspect it's an engine issue. I thought it might be the first Stabil treated tank of fuel after winter but now I'm on my 2nd tank and no change.Do you think some molecular change has occurred in the chrome as it ages or what? It's got 5300 miles on it and the gas is the mid range 89.I ain't wrapping them in tape but I may look for black pipes sometime in the future.

Blue pipes give a bike character. Since bikes had chrome exhausts and headers they have been turning blue.

Getting black pipes isn't going to solve anything, they'll eventually lighten up and look far worse than those good looking blued ones.

Think of it as your ride telling everyone else it isn't a garage queen. You don't want to look like a Starbucks lover do you?

When I bought my first BMW airhead twin back in the mid 70's, I panicked when the pipes started turning blue.  We didn't have the internet back then and there weren't that many Beemers where I lived so I called the dealer (50 miles away) and he assured me that it was normal due to the pipes being single-wall rather than double (pipe within a pipe).  A few years later, I moved to San Diego where I found a lot of BMW riders and all of them had blue header pipes.
You're fighting a losing battle if you think that you can totally eliminate the bluing because it will just keep on coming back.  I just accept it as giving the bike some character.

Yup, blued pipes means the engine got above idle.

If you decide to go black, there are some decent spray can coatings on the market now, one of which is VHT Flame Proof 1300-2000°F ceramic coating.  The part number for flat black is SP102.

BlueJob works through a chemical reaction, you`ve applied so much of the stuff to the chrome it is reacting differently to the heat now.

Now that is interesting.

Blue is bad? I didn't get that email. What I wouldn't give to have those beautiful blue pipes on this bike.

That's is very nice, I'm thinking of something like that for the Cali, chrome is the wife's favorite color though...

Look in the link I attached.  Cerakote does a "chrome" ceramic that looks damn near the real thing.

yes agree, firstly you got the blue pipes by cracking the ton down some freeway somewhere's and turning them red hot, and now after applying sways of liquid goo all over them to buff them up, the goo even though wiped off is instead reacting to the heat..maybe they will go a choc brown color next, and maybe if you rub hard enough, and all night long, they might come up like brass..brass mufflers on a MG, could start something new....sorry, couldnt help myself..I remember the pipes on my beloved Trident turned blue at 124mph..did spoil the chrome abit, but at least now I know when I buy a bike if the owner has wringed the guts out of it, or not..dead give away..

Blue pipes are cool.

Every bike had blue pipes until HD and the clones started using full-length heat shields (and some double-wall pipes) decades ago.

You're wasting good riding time polishing the blue off of the chrome.

You should be out trying to see how far down the pipe you can get the blue to go.  Hint:  It takes lots of throttle.   :bike

Show us your Mille Jim. The board will be impressed. Took a rat bike and for a few hundred $ has a fine looking machine including painting those headers black.
Jim is very humble and dose not like to brag but I am impressed with his work. I first saw his Mille and couldn't see the forest for the trees. A couple of month later well it's sharp. Looks the the big brother to the modern V7. Common Jim show us some before and after. We all love porn here.  :PICS!: :PICS!: :PICS!: :PICS!:
And while you are at it put you your before and after DT 100 Yamaha enduro  pics. Wait to you guys see what Jim built specifically for the Tail of the Dragon. Took a beater old enduro and well you'll see if Jim puts the pics up. I want bike porn   :PICS!: and Jim's got some cool stuff to look at: before and after.  :pop

I have sand blasted and painted several exhausts in my time. For my money I would rather pay up front and ceramicoat or heat proof powder coat than spray from a can. Rattle can jobs look good till a few miles on a wet dirty road. They get that brown hue that does not want to come off. My 1972 Suzuki TS90 had 2 rattle can jobs after sandblasting. I then blasted it again and had the Ceramicoat done. Even after a fair amount of caked on dirt, I use it as a pit bike while viewing racing events, the pipe is still black. Oh yeah, the poor think even did the "Dragon" 2 up and neither of us are light! I did cheat and take it there in my truck on the way to Barber Motorsports Park.

FYI, coat the inside of new chrome pipes and they won't turn blue. I have a 71 Triumph that I poured hi temp grill paint on the inside of the pipes when they were new. 15 years later and the pipes are still shiny chrome. when was the last time you saw that on an old Triumph :)

Did the same when I put NOS pipes on my 76 750 Honda, still nice.

You think that would hold up under the much hotter/leaner combustion temps on bikes that meet modern emissions stamps?

Especially ones that have Cat-Cons in the mufflers?

There are people that take torches to their headers to get them blue, you got it done without that hassle. Seems a pretty good deal to me.

If you rub them really hard a genie pops out and grants a wish.  I'd tell him I wish he'd stop turning the pipes blue.

Thank you, Harvey, but talk about a thread hijack!   :D   When I get a few minutes, maybe I'll start a new thread to answer your request.   :)

The bike has never been over 80 mph and it's never ''cracked a ton" on any freeway( whatever that means.) And no sways of liquid goo have been applied. You need to lighten up on the Fosters ,mate.

cracking the ton, means doing over 100mph, and I only drink tea...true
my words, or opinion's are to be taken in a broad context, (80 or a 100mph, whats afew mph between bikers), and in a light hearted manner..you sounded to serious, and I was trying to brighten you, and the situation up abit with some light hearted banter..oh never mind

Blue=heat. It's mostly normal.

However, a big change can indicate something to investigate. A sudden increase in exhaust heat can mean a couple things;
An ignition timing change-usually retarded. Chain stretch etc.
A lean condition-intake leaks
Poor fuel quality-incomplete burn, finishes in exhaust tract
Tight valve adjustment
reduced fuel pressure in EFI systems

Exhaust leak near the exhaust flange allowing fresh air into the pipes to burn off unburnt gasses in the pipes....

Blue means you are running lean, and if you want cool colored pipes get some Titanium pipes (arrow makes some) and watch them turn the color of the rainbow and amazing welds.

I've tried Kreem Blue Shield with limited success. Well, it's hard to tell how blue my pipes would be without using it. The instructions say to use it on virgin pipes, mine were not. They had about 5 miles on them and I tried to clean the inside with steel wool the best I could before I applied it.
