Breva 1100 starting issue
« on: March 12, 2016, 04:14:31 PM »
Hello,

I went to start my 2007 Breva 1100 earlier, pressed the starter button but only a clicking sound under the seat, any ideas? Frustrating because it's the first nice day we have had in the UK this year.  :thewife:

Starter relay fix kit
May 24, 2012 By mike

If your Breva or Norge or Griso sometimes makes a click from under the seat  when you want the motor to make a roar, you need our fix kit.  It solves a design deficiency and is easy to install. 5 minutes for the average owner.  its only $ 25 and it works !

1) make sure your battery is good and charging correctly and 2) install the bypass kit. I've done this on my Breva and only had the problem once after the bike sat a couple weeks in a cold garage.

Just because these bikes are difficult to bump-start I also ordered a compact jumper pack for $35 on Amazon which I carry as cheap insurance. It doesn't take much current, just enough voltage for the starter circuit to fire.

If you're getting the single click then it's the battery. Switch the trip computer over to Mode and change it to voltage readout, I bet you're at or around 11.2V which just isn't enough.

I had this happen with my Breva about 2 months ago and made the mistake of having the shop do a desulfate on it instead of springing for a new battery. It helped, but over time it would continue to no-start until it got to the point where it wouldn't crank at all even if it was hooked directly to my car's battery. About a month later the battery was complete toast and I needed a new one anyway.

Just get a new battery and save yourself the hassle of having to wait for one later when the weather is even nicer!

OK, stupid here, I have not installed the MPH fix yet. I received same in mail the other day and for the life of me I can't find the relays or the "bikes harness plug to insert the relay kit into.

Help

Remove seat, and right side cover. Look under seat toward the right side, sorta under the back of the tank. The relays are sitting there pushed onto small location brackets. The harness is attached to the relay and you'll see it when you lift it from the bracket.

Look for my old thread on Startus Interruptus it will show a photo or two of the relay and location.

There's been a lot of discussion over the years about this. Kev M nailed the solution IMHO

The reluctance of the starter solenoid to pull in is caused by the very heavy inrush current it likes to draw, in excess of 40 Amps.
Any bike that powers the start relay via the ignition switch is sooner or later going to fail.

To be clear, I didn't discover or create this fix. I just documented and promoted what others (like MPH) taught us.

As others have pointed out, it certainly sounds like the 'startus interruptus' issue.
You can clean the battery terminals, charge the battery, maybe even replace the battery. And that may help, for a while. Best to do one of the 'startus interruptus' fixes and be done with it.
