I’m seriously considering to go to Italy (from Sweden) to buy a Convert.
The plan is to find the bike on the web, drive a smaller van to Italy, pay, load it up and go home.
I will not need temporary plates etc.
I have a clear understanding what I need to do (in terms of bureaucracy and paperwork) to import and register the bike in Sweden. However I’m not sure what I (and the seller) need to do in Italy. If anything...
Can I just leave the plates with the owner or do we need to go to a ACI office together with the bike? Is there anything else I need to know?

You really want a Convert bad don't you? Seems like a lot of trouble to go through for a Convert, have you ridden one?

The seller has to go to any local ACI (Automobil Club Italia) and tell them the bike will be sent abroad and it must be deleted from the Italian records. Plates will not remain on the bike but the registration documents will, so it can be registered in another Country.
This can be done on the spot and off you go.
If you want to ride it back they can also issue temporary plates.
The seller should already know this.

Haha :wink:. I actually have. I almost bought one about ten years ago. Kind of regret I didn't but it was in a really rough shape.
And its not too bad. About 20 hour drive one way. Equivalent of an Iron Butt SS1000 :grin:

Thanks! Thats what I thought. Can I just leave the plates or does the owner need to bring the bike (with plates) to the ACI office?

There are of course some Converts for sale outside Italy but the selection/number of bikes at any given time is so much larger in Italy. Prices also seem to be slightly better in Italy. Brexit has unfortunately made UK really expensive (taxes and customs), there are no taxes, VAT, customs, etc for the EU!
And its just a few more hours of travel compared to Germany, France, etc!

I imported my Le Mans from Italy to UK (back when UK was still in the EU).
I brought the bike over as it was with the registration documents and plate and then sent the plate back to the seller later as he needed it to de-register/register as exported.
I was able to do it this way as the seller was a family friend and so trusted me to return it, and it helped speed things up from my end.
Presumably if buying from person unknown they would want to do the export declaration thing in advance or they could be liable for taxes & fines incurred through fraudulent use of the bike...?
