Gas station mystery NGC
« on: April 29, 2024, 09:43:21 AM »
2005 Ford Ranger. I went to get gas and put in 11 gals which fills it up when I have a quarter tank left. I paid at the pump and left and saw my gauge hadn’t moved and assumed it was broke but something didn’t seem right. I went back to a different pump and put in 11 gals which it shouldn’t have taken. The first filling didn’t pump any gas in but still billed me. I have to back on Tuesday to see the manager. No one I talked to can figure how the pump registered 11 gals, bill me and pump no gas

There’s a scam where people move the hoses to opposite side of the pump, then stand there and wait. When you pay on your side, the switched hoses puts your gas in their tank.

Unrelated, I once put 4 gallons in my stone and the pump registered 0 gallons pumped. Told manager about it and he found multiple pumps giving away free gas.

How did the guy on the other side of the pump know to only pump 11 gallons into his tank?

That’s another mystery. Why did it shut off at just the right time? Plus it wouldn’t let me top it off like usual.

The scammer doesn’t have to pump 11 gallons.  Pump B is simply available to use as long as Pump A is operating, even if Pump B doesn’t deliver as much as Pump A does.

I for one cannot understand..
If the hoses have been switched and you are pumping gas from his pump and he is pumping from yours, doesn’t it become obvious when you stop pumping but your display keeps climbing ?

Maybe it's time to revert back to visible gas pumps?

The responses to this subject sound like an Abbott & Costello "Who's on first" routine.

Yes I could see the display adding up. I wasn’t paying attention if gas was going in because I locked the trigger and got in the truck. As of now the credit card company shows no charge for the phantom gas.

Response #11 suggests otherwise.
