V65 Lario 1985, fitting Dyna S Ignition
« on: June 22, 2016, 06:03:00 AM »
Hi All
I'm a fairly new Guzzi owner so this is very much a large learning curve.

Bike wise, I bought my 1952 AJS way back in 1971 and restored her again recently, running club plates in South East Queensland.
So my knowledge of mechanicals is reasonable... until The V65 came along.

She had Piranha Ignition on when purchased, ran well but very untidy and with a lot of electrical baggage...

I have replaced the dead ignition switch, removed the PO two dead man cutout switches and generally tidied up.

But found I had no charge... lots of time later found some disconnected wires and plugged them back in the rectifier, all good and voltage as expected.

Unfortunately, when I replaced the front alternator cover, some of the wiring behind got caught in the rotating disc of the ignition and destroyed the wires and glass sensors - hence the new Dyna S.

The fitting instructions leave a lot to the imagination regarding timing, no marks at all on the back plate...

But my concern is the rotating advance/retard mechanism is rubbing on the back of the sensor plate...

I can't see anywhere to adjust anything, so hoping these pics will give you an idea what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers, Gray.

Dyna S module fitted but not set for timing.

Shaft showing drive pin (locates correctly in the slot) and collar behind.

A/R mechanism fitted, central tube extends approx 3mm past the end of the shaft, locks up tightly with bolt and washer.

Back of Dyna mount plate.

I have been working on a '86 Lario that came to me with the top end disassembled ; it had not run in a long time .
The back of the Dyna S sensor plate is ground down like yours as are the pins that hold the weights on the advance mechanism . Much worse than yours .
The pin under the oil pressure switch that locates the cam was missing , allowing the cam to move forward . On mine , the left intake cam follower rubbing against the shoulder of the cam was locating the cam ; keeping it from moving forward .
Seems the newer oil pressure switches incorporate this locating pin .

Can't type on a phone, but search for Lario rehab. Dyna timing there.

Thanks unclepete, exactly the answer I needed.

My Lario had an oil pressure gauge fitted, pickup in the sender unit hole, so no locating pin for the camshaft.

I tried to refit the old failed sender but so far it won't locate in the camshaft groove.

Is there a secret to this - fitting after the engine has been running?

I hope I dont have to strip back to the camshaft...

And thanks too Chuck, I'll find and follow that Lario rehab story.

Should be able to rotate that split collar with something pointy , there are holes for the pin 180 degrees apart ; cam has to be shoved back . Not much room because hole gets smaller beyond the threads . I used mirror and light when I installed the cam .

    "unclepete" you are pure genius.

Thanks a million.

Only 10 minutes fiddling with light - mirror - rotating engine forwards and back (using allen key in crankshaft beside the brushes) had the pin hole in the collar located and the sender unit carefully finger fitted with engine rocking - to locate the sender fully home successfully.

Tomorrow re-assemble the timing and off for a ride...yeeehhaaaa.

Cheers, Gray.

All good.

Been for a ride and today checked behind the sensor plate for clearance.

Yes, still 2mm of gap so extremely happy with the result.

Thanks again "unclepete" and Chuck in Indiana, all progressing well.

Now to set the timing with strobe...

Cheers Gray.
