Unloved BSA...?
« on: October 22, 2021, 09:42:03 AM »
Sadly, and IMHO....this poor '72 BSA 650 Lightning was not the most liked model ever produced...

It was too tall...it had the questionable OIF (Oil-in-Frame), overall performance was marginal, etc. etc....the list goes on..

However, someone will want it, I suppose...

Now, it was was the stunning and classic 1967 A65 model, like this one below...the price would go up! :thumb: :boozing:

What is questionable about the frame? Yes overly stiff suspension and the first models had a tall seat... In the case of Triumph with a near identical frame it was good enough to be more than competitive in many racing classes and a constant threat in current vintage race...In the late 70's Cook Neilson said the Triumph was one of the five best handling bikes... Do you know the other four?

Not all OIF's were cleaned adequately. This action would be imperative.

I think I remembered something like that as well... :thumb:

I’m guessing Cook Nielsen included the Ducati 750 green frame in that list since his was so great.

Ducati V Twin, Moto Guzzi, Triumph, Suzuki GS 750 and Yamaha 350 if my memory is correct. The Junk in the OIF's was the first year, Also include the exploding early 5 speeds, leaking fork seals and the usual Brit Bike faults..The later 60's BSA 's were bad...Many holed pistons from an improper ignition advance system. Bikes poorly assembled costing dealer money not reimbursed by the factory...
Today, the faults corrected, The BSA 650 is a decent sporting vintage ride.... Except for the ugly watermelon engine

Actually, that model in that color scheme is the BSA I'd most like to have.
Just goes to show... :-)

Otherwise I'd probably have to buy it.
