Hey Ben,
I would wager that your flywheel is a Manfred lightened piece. I have dug around for pictures of the one he did for my LM but can't find anything. I'm sure I have it somewhere in an old box of pictures. Memory may diminish after 35 years but certain things stay fresh when they make such an impression. I vote for keeping it in there. If you decide not to, let me know and I'll make you a nice stand to display it on. More art for the office!

That’s not a half bad idea Steve.  At the least I’m going to take a good picture and print it for the office. It would be nice having one of Manfred’s flywheels. Ben

It looks like a previous owner balanced the crank.  Now I think I’ll pull the cam and crank to give them a better look. I’m wondering if the cam is stock now.

Random suggestion of questionable helpfulness: If you are going to polish the raised oval on the valve covers don't do it with the ubiquitous bench grinder-mounted wheel (mop?)
When I sent my valve covers out for vapor blasting the very knowledgeable vendor used a lap grinder to polish the raised oval to keep everything flat and not lose the sharp edges of the MOTO GUZZI lettering...
Feel free to ignore this completely

Thanks for the tip guido. I wasn’t going to vapor hone the covers, but now the heads and cylinders have been bead blasted. I think I’ll see how they look, and if necessary get them honed. I’m lucky to have a great same day service shop in my town.

Manfred Hecht lightened the flywheel for my '83 SP. It didn't have near the number of holes in it that yours has. Jez sayin'...

What is the conventional wisdom behind lightening the flywheel ?

Same question.
I think I know why (revs faster?), but how much?

Here are a couple of the lightened flywheels on my bikes. Makes for fast revs.
850T with lemans flywheel with minor lightening - this is a nice compromise.

Lemans 1000 extreme lightening.

I finally got some time on the V7 today.  Crank and rods installed as well as rear main seal, oil pump and most of the oil system gaskets. I forgot to check to make sure that the rear bearing oil dowel is in place so off it comes again tomorrow.

Had the flywheel in my (now sold) V7 sport lightened by HMB. I enjoy the engine characteristic it gives.

Your work is, as always, excellent!

Hey Ben,
Curious as to why the PO saw the need to balance the crank. Isn't that typically done when going with a big bore kit? Have you measured the bores?

Finally getting back into the Sport today.  I checked new ring end gaps in the n/s plated cylinders and installed rings on the pistons. One of the few steps that I can handle on the kitchen counter with a clear conscience.

I’m not sure exactly what was done to the engine Steve. The crank has been filed here and welded there so definitely balanced.  The pistons have three rings instead of four and stock spec rings fit fine with one top ring left over on each side.

Thanks for the encouragement Dave.
