Hello, my name is Paul and I just got registered on this fine forum. Just bought a2007 Nevada Classic, was good, but now it seems to be dis-charging the new battery rather quickly. Has failed twice, to the point of pushing home or trucking. The dealer is sending new starter relays. What do you all think? Thanks

Good luck with the relays but it is probably a bad rectifier or voltage regulator.

Thank you Mr. Kelly. Forgot to mention, bike is always on a battery maintainer, was fully charged today, rode seven miles, is now 8:30, bike has been on  maintainer since 3:30, still charging.

I agree, changed a few. Make sure you check the fuses too.

Disconnected Alt puts out 20V AC at idle, 65V AC at 4000rpm if you got a meter

Not directly to this thread, but one thing which I have few time thought/questioned with my own Nevada (year model 2005).

As you turn power on, the headlight will be on automatically. So always as you'll start the bike. Now if the battery is bad shape (end of lifecircle), you could want to try to start the bike with headlight off (but now that is not possible). Perhaps this is one kind of security matter (lights will be always on as you ride the bike) but I have wondered how about installing separately switcher?

What I did on my Cal2 that has a switch from LM5 w/lites on all the time is----------- disconnect the high beam wire on the plug in the bucket. Then when you start put on high beam for headlight off.  I don't use high beam on sidecar rig at all anyway.
You could also make it like an EV and go to a relay to shut it off.

Thanks Tom, as well as everybody else. The battery is brand, spanking new. Going to get the neighbor to load test. One thing, I've never had a bike take 8 hrs to come back to full charge after a 40 mile ride. Could this be voltage regulator/ rectifier problem? Thanks, Paul

More likely than the altenator. You should have the alt out put checked w/a meter to know for sure.

Hello all. Nevada update, the problem was a fried connector from the voltage regulator to the alternator. Dan Hobart of Hobarts Cycles in Rock Island, Ill., an independent shop found the problem. Have put a couple hundred miles on it with no issues. Now, I'm waiting on the side stand springs so I can get rid of the baling wire!

Thanks for that tip on Hobart's. I know I will have a need for a shop in the future. They don't list Guzzi but hopefully they aren't afraid to work on them. They are relatively close for me.

One thing that can be easily checked is the leads out of the Stator to the Voltage Regulator.

I spent a night in Beatty Nevada waiting for a pickup ride home.  Once parts came in I can't tell you how pissed I was when I found out it was just corrosion of the connection.  I installed the new Voltage Regulator that I'd purchased anyway.

Now whenever I tour I pack a multimeter.  I guess I was lucky that Beatty had a motel 6 and Casino.  I wish they had a hardware store so I could have fixed the bike there.
