Pet peeve
« on: May 11, 2021, 06:27:46 AM »
In the interest of reducing this forum to its lowest version, I’d like to air one of my pet peeves.

I hate when someone restores a motorcycle and resets the odometer to zero.  It’s not that I think it’s dishonest, because mileage doesn’t really matter to me as much as condition.  It just feels as if it glosses over the life of the bike and it’s owners.  Every mile was important to someone.

Don’t even get me started on Armor All on tires.

If I’ve offended anyone, I am truly sorry.

You will get no argument from me, you should br proud of the miles it has done, in fact i think it's illegal to wind the speedo back.
When I replaced the Vaglia on my VII Sport I had Speedhut set the new odometer same as the one that failed.

When I see that on a restored bike I think they are trying to hide something. That's just my viewpoint, restorers can do whatever they want, it's their bike.

Grinds my gears too. Why wouldn't anyone be proud of getting a high mileage bike back to pristine condition? I'd be saying "Whoa, 100K and in THAT condition? Amazing!"

Pet peeves:

Anytime the seller put the bike has/had "original" miles and the work "like" used in like a sentence like ummm when a seller is ahh like talking about like original miles.

My biggest pet peeve about motorcycles is probably spending more on pets than motorcycles because mileage on the odometer doesn't matter if yours doesn't work or if there's not even a speedo on your bike.

Mine is well on its way to its 4th self reset.
Bike condition and how it runs is more important IMO, as Dusty mentioned odometers from veglia are less than 100% reliable.
Weve all seen nearly new, low milage bikes you wouldnt touch with your worst enemy's wallet due to owner abuse and yet there would be many very high milage bikes belonging to owners on this forum you couldnt get your wallet open quick enough if they came up for sale.

I hate it when someone who should know better in State Parlaiment turns around and says...
“Mr Speaker, I thank the honourable member for his question..
As members on this side of the house are aware Mr Speaker, the honourable member has worked tirelessly for his constituents and his efforts cannot be UNDERESTIMATED...!
Or
I know that it was dark and hard to see the edge of the road...
But the driver is to blame IRREGARDLESS...
Or
The Yanks pronounce a widely used metal as Aluminum...
But spell it as Aluminium.
Or
The young ones use “like” and “I’ve gone” and “like he’s gone”
“I’m like no way and he’s gone waaayyyy, so I’m like noooo..!
And he’s like gone whateverrrrr....
Or
“Today I saw a rock on the road so I decided to countersteer..”

What hacks me off is little short kids (shorter than the plexiglass) at the salad bar. They have height limitations on carnival rides, why not salad bars?       Half the time, they mix the garbanzo beans with the frozen peas and RUIN my salad bar experience!  :food:

Original miles, freeway miles, highway miles and : ran when parked , all have the same smell to me. Only lightly rolled with a salvage title can up those when in an advert or claim

I think, I guess, that it depends on the vehicle. I recently picked up an old Vespa sans engine. The speedo was intact but super-scratched up and faded. It was nice Veglia speedo. I was going to put a brand new engine in, and replace pretty much everything else on the frame. I sent the speedo to a Veglia restorer in Cali, and he asked whether I wanted it rolled back. I said sure, logic being -- the engine is going to be brand new, all the way down to the cases, everything else is new, except the frame and some affiliated bits--why keep an arbitrary # from the PO on what is, essentially, a brand new bike? Even more arbitrary because speedo cables break all the time, POs don't change them out, and so who knows accurately how many miles were actually on the bike? And it will at least be easier for *me* to keep track of how many miles I put on this frame/engine combo. And for me, that's what matters.

Just an alternative point of view. YMMV, as folks say.
