Wire wheel Norge
« on: January 24, 2016, 10:50:28 AM »
Hey, long time reader, first time poster. I read that someone wanted to know if anyone has done a wire wheel conversion on a Norge, answer is yes. I grabbed a set of hubs from a Bellagio while on tour in England and sourced new Behr rims from Dresden. Boring the new rims to get the spoke angle perfect involved making a proper jig and special alignment tool, but results are fantastic. Bike looks fabulous I reckon. I'm happy to share my experience with anyone genuinely wanting to do the same, I don't know how to post an image on the forum but I'll do some homework, happy to e mail to anyone who's interested.

Sounds interesting! I'd love to see pics if you can post them.

Personally, I really like the look of wire wheels, but not the hassle of cleaning them.

Looks weird on a Sport Touring bike. You should sell them to someone with a Griso.

A fair amount of work went into that transformation...al l that matters is that it looks good to you.

it does remind me of the 1960s long nose Jaguar E-types.

Just curious...why the re-routing of the exhaust to a higher position...I'm guessing you don't have a pillion who rides with you much or do you do a lot of deep water crossings?

Nice.  My friend just put cast wheels on a Stelvio.  Go figure.

It makes the bike look lighter.  No side bags and silver wire wheels make the bike look 100lbs lighter.

Yeah.  I think removing the lower fairing, going with the wire wheels, and the high muffler, give the bike a classy look.

In the vein of a Jag XJ with wire wheels.

Why not just buy some Griso SE wheels?

Would they be a bolt on? If so,  that might be an option for those who like that look.

It makes the bike look lighter.  No side bags and silver wire wheels make the bike look 100lbs lighter.

Looks can be deceiving.  I have the cast aluminum wheels on my Stelvio.  They are slightly lighter than the spoked wheels that came OEM on the bike.  Also, the rear cases will weigh only about 12-15# each.  His largest weight savings, if the cat converter is in the muffler on the Norge (like the Stelvio), is probably the aftermarket muffler without the converter.  If the converter is not in the muffler, and mounted elsewhere on the bike, the weight savings will only be a few pounds.

The bike looks better without the top box but I keep it on 'cos it's so darn handy, oh and BTW my mistake, the Guzzi has not done 100,000 km, it's 92,0000,  oops.

For anyone interested, I've also done some other mods over the years. I removed the silly up/down switches that operate the screen and put in a waterproof two way toggle switch just below the left handlebar on the black fairing panel, that meant I could reduce the massive handle bar width by 40 mm each side and rotate them slightly rear wards to give a straight wrist  when seated. Repositioned the 12 v power plug from where you can't get at it , to in side the fairing near the screen switch.

Can you shed some light on which toggle switch you used here Huzo?  Thanks!

Yes, it's just a toggle switch that I got from a good auto elec. it points straight up at rest, when you hold your finger one way it lowers the screen till you release it, or raises when held opposite. You need to identify the live wire that feeds the button for each side on the silly standard setup and splice them together, feed that into your toggle to supply power, then simply wire the other two remaining wires into your new switch to achieve the up/down function that you're after. The big PITA with the original setup wasn't reaching with your left thumb for "up", it's taking your hand off the throttle to retract the screen, or to reach across with your left.If you jump on your bike and look where your left hand is on the 'bar, directly below that on the black panel that screws to the fairing is where I mounted mine. It just works better.

I just noticed that in both shots that show the left side of the bike, you can see the switch if you look closely.

Even thou I purchased a burnt orange Griso, red has never been a color on a bike or a vehicle for me. But, your bike looks gorgeous, love the wire wheels look on it.
