Title: Must-have accessories V85
Post by: dxhall on September 19, 2020, 08:05:37 PM
I picked up the new V85 TT this afternoon.  Any accessories I can’t (shouldn’t) live without?

I would go for a taller screen, even with it I still had to add a wind deflector, cheap on eBay.  I didn’t like the looks at first but I’m used to it now and I love it on longer trips.  I also did engine guards and heated grips. Mine is the adventure which came with panniers and a top box, a must if you travel.  Enjoy!!

I'm a fan of center stands as well.
And bigger screens- the stock V85 screen sucks for me.  The CalSci XL works very well, but it is a barn door (fwiw, the CalSci site recommends a medium for my relatively average size).
I don't have crash bars.  I figure if I crash that bad, I'm dead or getting a new bike.

Center stand, engine bars -- OEM and SW-Motech are both good.  As Huzzo noted, you may or may not want to screw around with the windscreen.

Engine bars are a 30-60 min DIY install.  Most of that time is spent finding and pulling off the plastic caps that protect the bolt holes, lining up the bolts, and torquing the harder-to-get-at-wrench-on rear ones one flat at a time.

Center stand is also and easy DIY... if you can sort out a way to tension the  spring(s).  I used a lever which I tied to the spring assembly, with the conveniently-placed loop at the end of the stand serving as a fulcrum.  It took me 30 minutes of fiddling to get the length of the cords right, then it slipped right on, no problem.  Other people have tried blocking the wheels, hitching a come-along to the spring assembly and some convenient tree/garage frame/granite ouctcroppuing, and hoping... not always successfully...  that something terrible doesn't happen.  Or you could just ask the shop to do it.

Oops.. one more thing... some owners go tubeless, either with some 'gosh I hope this works' tubeless conversion or spending the money for Alpina wheels.

I did the Alpina wheels as I can’t stand black rims and wanted tubeless, pricey, but half the price of others I looked at.  Lots of color choices.

Heated grips are pretty nice unless you're living in a desert.  Even then, nights can be pretty cold, especially as one ages.

An aftermarket, washable/reuseable air filter can be an asset for long-distance travel away from dealerships, as can an accessory or better home-made tool storage tube for a minimalist, carefully curated handful of essentials.

Good point!  I keep forgetting about that.  MyTech (I think) makes a spiffy little toolbox that fits inside the right hand pannier rack, and SW-Motech make a bolt-om tool roll for people who don't want to DIY.

Also, that trendy adventure-style raised front fender does a great job of failing to prevent mud from getting flung onto the front of the engine.  Ask me how I know this.  Pyramid plastics makes a behind-the-front-wheel hugger that might (or might not, the jury is still out on this) catch some of the mud.  Alternatively, the front fender for an For Aprilia Caponord 1200, (part number 2B003404, I think) bolts right on below the adventure-style fender.  You can even get a littkle extender fromj (you guessed it!) Pyramid Plastics to make it longer (yeah, that's what they all say ).  Somehow I ended up with two of these.  Neither of which I've quite got around to installing.

I just did a google search and King Wheels in the U.K. Came up, although when they arrived from somewhere in the U.S., sorry, I didn’t make note of who or where and the boxes are long gone.
They look to be the O.E.M. wheels, mine are anodized but you can have them painted or polished.

I found King Wheels to be the least expensive option by a couple hundred dollars even after international shipping.

In my humble opinion the singular must have is a Y-pipe. The amount of heat generated by the Cat is unbearable.
The only issue that arises is that of conscience and whether or not you can except the slightly higher emissions.

the cal-sci screen may be an ugly barn door, but it works very well.  total still air.

Anyone changed the stock seat?  My butt was a little sore after 100 miles today.  Otherwise, I’m really impressed.

I don’t see the Alpina wheels in my future, though.

I got the tall Guzzi comfort saddle, it is gel filled and very nice, 1" taller than stock, they also make a same as stock and 1" lower version

I am 6-0" and the stock Travel version windshield is great, I think it is the tall Guzzi shield.  Very nice.

As others have said, center stand and crash bars, dealer installed for free (labor) when I bought it.

I removed the little butt stop in the middle of the seat.  This allows another inch of fore-aft movement and solved my issues with the saddle.

I still have the Stocker’s with tires on them as I wanted to put on street tires.  I’ll try and sell in the future when work isn’t so busy, but I don’t think they’ll be much demand for them.

I prefer to have tubeless wheels for the places I go in the event of a flat. In the past I have used the 3M tape to make my spoked wheels tubeless but never really trusted it, it also threw my wheels way out of balance and I needed a lot of extra weight to get them balanced even close to correctly.

All of my flats have been on the rear wheel, so I only ordered a rear Alpina. I can always order a front in the future if I choose, but I doubt I'll do it.

The big benefit comes in the form of weight savings. Some of us may be surprised how much those tubes weigh and that is unsprung weight mind you. I just happened to have a set of tubes on the shelf in the garage so I pulled them out and threw them on the kitchen scale.
The front tube came in at 1 lbs 14 oz and the and the rear measure 2 lbs 2.5 oz.
I am planning on going tubeless here in the near future just for the weight savings.

Absolutely...
If I could have the same finish as yours but in a subdued silver, I would have chosen that, but the kicker was also the reduced cost for me. However, you have the considerable benefit of a new set of standard wheels to sell.
Was the $1,600 for the rims assembled to your hubs, or the whole lot ?
Either way, it looks spectacular IMO.

They also come with 90 deg valves and one other thing you have to move over from the old wheel is the cush rubbers for the rear drive, trivial job once you convince yourself the rubbers just pull out of the rim and you aren't damaging them by pulling them off.

I did a rough estimate and the Travel has about 2000 in options if bought separately...

The Travel is a great model - I have an Adventure. I suggest you try riding the bike with the stock saddle as many really like it. You can always get a tall saddle later if it's not working for you. You can also take the rubber inserts out of the pegs for a bit more leg room. At 5-11 but short 30" inseam I bought the low comfort saddle as I found the stock a bit too high.

I fitted the High comfort saddle, SW motech footrests (about an inch lower and wider) and bar risers (about an inch) It opens up the ridding position well for me 6Ft 2in and 34 inside leg. The bar risers were just kicking about the workshop but I like them.Other than that a centre stand, Heated grips ( I live in Scotland!!) and various screens to minimise Buffetting. Settled on A Puig copy for BMW 1200 gs Which is pretty good for colder weather and a minimal screen for the three days of summer

The standard Caponord mudguard is for a 17" wheel and does not fit. It's the Caponord Rallye front mudguard that fits. I have one on mine and it fits perfectly.
The part number for the correct mudguard is 2B001431.

Without a doubt, a cup holder for coffee on the go. just clips onto the mirror stalk.
It's worth it for the startled look you get from the drive through staff.

Magnetic change tray, only in Canada eh!
Nowdays I just have a slot for my tap card.

Some of the mods I did to mine were purely cosmetic. Some were a definite improvement, but the one that I’d say was a standout, is the Denali auxiliary spots.

Appreciate the comments, Borderer: did you find the gel/tall seat made much of a difference and was it actually more "comfortable" I often wnder if adding a 1" seat pad for $25 from walmart for atvs trimmed and sewed back w/ fishing wire would have the same effect
Hard to say really, I found the standard seat ok for 300 mile+ runs, same with the gell seat That was last year before we had lockdown seems a bit more uncomfortable this year. But I think I will toughen up in that area with a few more miles, ( or pay a few visits to miss Whiplash!)

Where are you guys buying the OEM accessories from? Is there a reasonable online store or do I have to get it through the dealer?
