CalVin Advice needed.
« on: December 17, 2014, 03:44:09 PM »
I'm buying a 2008 CalVin from a real nice guy in N.J. that currently has a Wixom fairing installed. He also has a Rifle and the original stock windshield with the bike. I'm not sure I really like the Wixom, but he is willing to change it out for one of the other 2 before I have the bike picked up. I will still end up with all 3. Any thoughts on which is better?

Thanks
Jerry

Personal preference!
Many people don't care for the stock one all that well but it's ok to me, I added a 3" taller shield and it didn't make much difference at all. Just play with it till your happy (the bike)

Why not leave the Wixom on and see how you like it?   It looks good, painted to match.  I think it would be alot easier to take that off, then have to put it on.  He did have to relocate the spot lights to fit the fairing.  FWIW,  I was fine with the stock windshield too.  However, the single biggest gripe about the Calvin is buffeting from the stock windshield.

Personally I like my stock windscreen. It functions very well for me, and I don't think any of the aftermarket ones look as good.

I was pleased with the Rifle police style screen on my EV -- but only after adding lowers to cut the buffeting.  I thought it looked great and provided a pretty fair amount of protection.  But remember: Get the lowers!

The Rifle shield will be both taller and wider. For a stock look with a little more coverage the Rifle answers...

it's been said before on this forum, but the swannee/h&h fairing, available from Harper's is night and day difference from the stock or rifle windscreen.

However, this only applies from speeds of around 50mph and up, below that the difference is minimal. If you're going to do a lot of touring, I'd say keep the wixom on or get a swannee, but if you're just pootling round town it doesn't matter whats on there.

And yes, full fairings dont tend to look as good as a nice clear police windshield so there is an element of form v function. Your choice.

Even with the very best bespoke earplugs in the game, the head-shaking buffetting behind the stock screen at highway speeds gets really pretty nasty.

I dealt with buffeting by installing Vetter Pop Vents on my Rifle windshield. The cost is quite reasonable...I got mine for $37 delivered.

Looks great! The bike too ;)

Hey, what lubricants do you use with your CalVin? Easy now, I'm serious.

Jerry,

Look here: http://rifle.com/Classic-Lowers-for-EV1100-California-98--P2406.aspx

BTW, they also protect the fork tubes from road damage.

Do these work on a CALVIN as the bike has the driving lights and I was thinking that they might be in the way.

Look here: http://rifle.com/Classic-Lowers-for-EV1100-California-98--P2406.aspx

Oh yeah, I reduced turbulence by lowering my stock shield as far as bracket would allow.

Jerry, I just use the lubricants specified in the manual. I haven't gotten hung up on a particular brand with motor oil, as it is only available from a few (very reputable) makers. I do shop for sales, buying whenever the price is low. The recommended oil is a synthetic that is good for 6000 miles...

Good point.  Not sure, since the EV didn't come with spots.  I did mount my spots on the engine guard bars, so no issue for me.  I'm not familiar with how the spots are mounted on a CalVin and what work-arounds may (or may not) be available if there is an issue.

if you want to run with the stock windshield at higher speed you can swap the mounting brackets from left & right sides and it will lift the screen by about an inch letting air in near the headlamp this stops the handle bar shake as you get up to !##mph.

Sheepdog. How is the Rifle different from the original windshield? Would putting the pop up vents in the original windshield accomplish the same thing if the windshield height is ok?

The Rifle shield is one or three inches wider and available in three heights that are taller than stock (I believe mine stands 21.5" above the top of the headlight). The pop vents should work with any shield if you're satisfied with the height/width.  Also, I find that the windshield works best if you angle it parallel with the fork tubes.

I've been thinking of having a custom Rifle shield made that is shorter and narrower than stock.
