$5,000 Canadian ( $3,900 U.S.A.) for a bike last registered 28 years ago? Seller says "needs front tire, battery, some TLC" .

As a recent comparable, I paid $2800 us for my new 1981 Lemans CX100 about a month ago. Last registered around 20 yrs ago.  Supposedly newly rebuilt engine shortly  before parked that looks legit.  It will need all brakes done, tires and more before its on the road.

I was first to commit to come get it.   When I got there,  Seller had others waiting for me to say no.  I'm happy to  have  it.

A fair price is when both sides are happy. Therefore what I think would be a fair price will be different to someone else.

I will give a few observations since you asked. Add up everything that is required to go for the first ride on this remembering that it has not had any maintenance for at least 28 years. This includes missing parts, full service, new tires, brake lines, fuel lines and such. Now add a bit for the problems you cant see or know about as it has not been for a decent run in 28 years. If that number is less or equal to what you would pay for a bike that looks like this cosmetically it is a fair price.

I have found that when buying used motorcycles or machinery looking and listening to the seller has been equally as beneficial as looking at the item. The line if it does not sell the price goes up is not what I want to hear when buying a bike. Every person will have a different reaction to this comment. I would probably not engage with this seller but that is just me and I may be missing out on a great buy. I like my bike ownership to be a positive experience. That starts from when I go to buy the bikes and ends when I have had a positive selling experience.

Frankly I never even add in the cost of tires, fluids, filters, etc into my thinking.  Really no matter what you get thats not brand new will need all of those whether its a $500 rat, or a nice clean low mile more modern model. Also where you are matters. Near me you almost NEVER see a Guzzi on sale. So a few hundred extra for a local bike you can see, and put your hands on before buying can be money well spent. Plus if you REALLY want it.. The "I had one in the day" or :My Dad rode one when I was a kid" makes a huge difference to a lot of people. Personally that looks like a pretty solid project. Not sure I would pay the 3900 US on it, but personally I would look good and hard into it in the upper 2k range.

A T5 in good running condition doesn't typically bring this kind of money.

Only in Europe and even then some are below this asking price. There are 50 T5s for sale on the link below. All in Europe.

I would give someone else the "opportunity" to throw their money on the line for a time first, then tell the seller: "$xx00...or the price goes down!" if it were rarer, then ok....guzzistas willing to pay are rarer still!

That's a non federalized Canadian sourced Series III, a eurospec bike with ~ 17,000 miles on the clock. Doesn't look like it's in particularly good condition, frt master cylinder reservoir cap bolts need lotsa care (and removal of whole ass'y from bike) to tease em out rather than strip heads... Dash has speedo reset knob removed, possibly relocated (as I did, on mine) but no plug to hide hole. Frt master cyl rubbers only, no piston, are still available at Motogiovane, but no other related frt master cyl cpts are avail any more.

You have no idea re the bike's condition... I'd be kinda careful (and cheap with my money).

Would likely be hard pressed to find someone that would take it away for free, let alone pay $5000 or more. That era of Guzzi does not sell well around here. DonG

I'd offer to haul it off if he paid me $250.  Cost of fuel, and all...

Otherwise, he can incur the cost of transport to the breakers.

"Barn find , last registration was 1994 . Shes beautiful, cleaned up and ready for someone to take her on the road . Needs battery, front tire and some TLC . Sold as is or the price increases."

This is how I read the add;
I found this in some blokes shed, it was parked 28 years ago after a breakdown and he could not afford the bill. He told me what was wrong with it so I picked it up for a song. I have given it a wash. I am not totally dishonest as I have said it needs some TLC. I just won't tell you how much as no one will buy it. I am selling it as is, because if I get it running I would have to charge a ridiculous amount of money just to recover my costs and still make at least 300% on my initial investment. I had a battery for it but I don't want one anywhere near it. You would not believe the sounds this thing makes when you try and turn it over. Please come for a look and I will talk nonstop and tell you how good a buy this is, sell it to you for $3000 and move on to my next quick deal.

Hasn't registered since '94.  Needs a front tire.

???  Is there some magical reason why it doesn't need to replace the at least 28 year old rear tire???

Take my similar SPII (registered and modernized) off of the swap meet page and you'll have $3k left over for gas.  Only needs a rider.

Come on all you naysayers it's a Moto Guzzi so it's gotta be worth the asking price in the current condition. I mean isn't the barometer-O-value the fence post Guzzi? It's not the truckload of money you'll invest to create a $3,500 bike, its the therapeutic value from spending the GDP of a small nation and 100's of hours of labor to have a bike worth 4X less then you have invested in it.

I say buy any Guzzi at any price. Its worth it even if its not worth it.

BUY IT before someone else does!!!
Yes…
I knew you’d come around. I’m surprised you’d quote me, but you’ll rarely go wrong if you do.
Also.
Why does it matter what it’s “worth”, isn’t it the prerogative of the buyer to decide that ?
The seller decides how much he wants you to pay, buyer decides what he will pay, because to him that’s what it’s worth. Because that will be exactly equal to how much money has been handed over.

You were almost giving you GS away, does that mean it’s worth nothing ?

I have a number in my head for any bike that I don’t just HAVE TO HAVE - $1,000.00.  It’s not based on reality or actual value, but the amount I’m willing to throw at something interesting but not essential. I like this T5 but even at $1000 it would be hard to make it right and safe and not be under water.

Ben hit it on the head, thats why I said $800 IF he has clean title in hand.

I was wondering about the rear tire too... What is up with that.. 'Needs a front tire'- hell man, it needs a whole lot more than that!

Meanwhile Huzo thinks you're a nancy if you dont fly-n-ride to pick it up and ride it across the country with a pocket full of spanners! Man up!

... and lastly, whoever said the seller is delusional is the official winner of the thread, perfect answer!

Fair Price?  No.

Have ridden and worked on a few T5's. Find them less nimble that the T3's. They perhaps have more rake in the steering, longer CAL frame?....dunno.
