Scura/V11 Sport Resto-mod suggestions?
« on: April 04, 2016, 02:28:03 PM »
My 2016 goal is to bring the Scura to perfection.  I've done the basics: changed the clutch, tuned the Ohlins, added a Power Commander.

The bike runs great.  Now it's time to sweat the small stuff.  Before starting I want a good "to do" list.  So I'm looking for suggestions from all you V11 lovers.

Are there any electrical changes or upgrades?

I've done the clutch, any other mechanical upgrades?  Fuel pump?

Cosmetic: Levers?  Refinish the engine cases?  Mirrors?

Thanks for your thoughts!

They are pretty well sorted, but.. *very important* run a dedicated ground wire (say 14 gauge) with star washers from the regulator case to a bolt on the engine case. All kinds of bad things can happen if you don't.

Throw away the Power Commander and learn how to dial in the ECU with Guzzi Diag
Clean the ignition switch
Add a pair of proper horns with a relay direct from battery
Add a headlight relay to bypass the tiny wires to the dimmer switch
A pair of Speedhut clocks
Add an oil pressure gauge (unless you have one of Pete/s slopage plates)

Other than that she's beautiful.

Man, that is one great looking motorcycle. I had a green red framed 2000, wish I still had it.

The fuel tank is a peculiar problem with those V11's.  The fuel pump takes from one side of the tank and recirculates back to the other side.  Eventually, the pump side depletes and the bike stops while there is still a significant amount of fuel left on the return side of the tank behind the hump.

I fabricated some l-r connectors that I attached to the tank fittings of my Scura to allow fuel to go back and forth to each side until all was used by the pump.

I've thought about some H&B cases.

I also have a Unigo I could do in silver or matte black.

I miss mine.

I had bought some spoke hubs that I had planned to lace with new rims and run spoke wheels on mine. Alas, I sold it before the change.

That's an interesting idea.  Would Cal tubeless rims fit?  Are they 17"?

PAINT IT WHITE!

I forget: is the Scura a short frame w/ the fuel filter external to the tank or a long frame with the redesigned tank [no chin pad] and the fuel pump & filter in the tank [uses the fuel as a heat-sink to prevent vapor lock?] If you've got the external filter, you'll want to insulate it so you don't run into the no-hot-start problem...

No.  No.

But Rosso Puro might be able to hook you up with some Alpina wheels.

That bike is just fabulous. Looks like the only thing it needs is someone's ass on the seat and a gut full of gas and.... GO !!!!!!! Why not start with Canada/Alaska ?

Also just wondered after another look. Is the motor in the V11 the same as the Norge, or if not where does it differ. That bike looks like it's begging to leave for somewhere. Are you in the States ?

There are major differences between the V11 series engines and the Norge.

I would also suggest stripping and inspecting the bevelbox with particular attention to the pinion nose bearing.

If you are considering spokes, Ghezzi/Brian will lace up a nice set of Kineo wheels in whatever color combo you like. Made just for that bike.

Had them make these for one I am putting together.

The shift lever return spring on some of the V11's would rub on a casting and break. I replaced mine but the original was in fine shape.

I don't remember all the details about the wheels. I did get a set of spoke hubs from a previous Guzzi model that would fit but I was going to have Buchanan lace up some new rims. I wasn't going to use tubeless.

That Scura was the best-shifting motorcycle I have ever ridden.  That single-plate clutch was the bees' knees. It had a very light pull and take up was just right. I had synthetic oil with moly in the transmission and I spent time adjusting the internal shift mechanism when I removed the side door to replace the lever spring.

Yes, it was a smooth, good-running bike.

Of course, ALL of the magazine test articles complained that the V11's had way too much vibration in the handlebars.  They also pointed out that the bikes nodded sideways when you blipped the throttle....

I really liked mine and I liked what I felt in the bars.

The V11 was good. However, the Stelvio can handle a curvy road better, in my opinion.

At this point, I just ASSuME that anyone around here would have a sloppage sheet on thier sporty Guzzi.

But, we all know about ASSuming.

Yes.  If the bike doen't have a Pete Roper / Moto Moda sloppage sheet, it needs one.

And I knew a former racer who was a terror on a KLR here in The Hills.  Of course, when he was on a sporty bike, he was gone.

I know Stelvios are competent machines, and may be more "fun" for some people on some roads, but the spine frame bikes are really competent on curvy tarmac.

Oil Pump pick up is toward the front of the sump on V11 Sport/LeMans.  So, under heavy acceleration and with less than full oil level, oil starvation can occur.  This is sometimes noted by a dim flash from the oil pressure light on the dash, if you happen to be looking at the dash, instead of down the road while the throttle is pinned and you're heeled over through that perfect sweeper.

The "sloppage sheet" works like a windage tray.  Pete makes them from sheet and they're perforated in the right places to allow oil to flow back down into the sump, but also to keep the oil in the sump during vigorous riding.  It's mounted between the spacer and the block, above the oil pan.

I would recommend sending a PM to Pete Roper here on Wild Guzzi, and he should be able to send you one direct.

Leafman pointed out the "testers" comments regarding the nodding to the side due to torque reaction when blipping the throttle. Doesn't that lend character to the bike ? Would you install a mod to remove this characteristic if it was possible, I think not. It'd be like owning a 350 Camaro and complaining that the bonnet (hood) dips when you gun it at idle !
