New cam follower - would you install it?
« on: January 11, 2019, 03:05:33 PM »
Hi all,
I have a MG California EV with hydraulic lifters.
Due to the breakdown of this system I have purchased replacement parts from MG
via a dealer.

The picture shows one of the cam followers. Look closely at the picture and tell me
if you would install it? Bear in mind that it is a brand new sparepart from MG.

Many thanks for your input!

Sorry, I can't help you here other than to say the finish on your follower is nicer than what you'd get on a new Kawasaki cam lobe.

Looking at it closely you can see a gouge in it. I would ask for another one. It is not a scratch but a deeper mark. Is this what you are asking about? Or the coating on it? Maybe put up a pic of comparing 2 of them.

Install if you cant get a replacement. Ive seen new followers worse, but not from Guzzi. sometimes crappy ones get through. I once got a set for a v-8 that had little points in the center of the face. they went back. Its up to the installer to be the last point of inspection.

Fascinating - there has to be an approved process and inspection criteria to make these things - if this is what an acceptable piece looks like to the manufacturer I wonder what the rejects look like.
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

So did this come as part of the final upgrade kit? I'm assuming you've already done the springs, rockers, retainer caps, cam etc?

If a nicer one wasn't immediately available, I'd finger-polish the contact surface with 1000 grit wet-n-dry until I liked what I saw.
Something wistful and amusing, yet poignant.

It is unsatisfactory to polish the surface by hand as the surface has a large convex radius.  It is not flat as it may appear.
