Give us some detail.  As written, it could be that your battery was stolen or that you're out of gas  . . . .

Kill switch on handlebars? Check that. I know it's an easy one, but it has gotten me a few times. Doesn't say much about me, I know...

Let's assume it's Startus Interuptus or something similar.

Turn handlebars side to side, try again
Jiggle keyswitch, try again
Put in into and out of gear, try again
Put the kickstand down, then up, try again
Remove seat and wiggle battery cables, try again
Attach jumper cables (if available), try again
Unplug and replug starter relay (one of the relays under the seat/rear of tank, toward the right side, try again

While the seat is off, listen/feel for a faint clicking sound at that starter relay, if you hear/feel it, but the starter doesn't engage, this is Startus Interruptus.

I'll trade you a starting/running Breva 1100 for it

Just kidding.

If you need a tow, and can't get one before this evening, I could run out late this evening and tow it home for you.

Ran in to Lowes for less than 5 minutes.
It was 88 degrees outside & sunny
Bike would not start...  I tried all those things you mentioned up to wiggling the battery cable, but not the things you mentioned after that
CHECKED
Kill  switch
In neutral
Kickstand up
3 gal. of gas in tank
Lights come on & horn works
Rocked it front & back in gear
Tried starting it in gear w/ clutch pulled in... wouldn't start!!!
It had been sitting 30 minutes in the sun so I moved it in the shade for 25 minutes.... and somehow after several attempts, it fired up and I rode home!

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP

What do I need to do to prevent this from happening again?

Sounds exactly like what happened to me on what is now Jay's 06 Breva 1100 back (EDIT TO CORRECT YEAR) in 2011(though in my case my daughter and I had stopped at Famous Dave's BBQ for lunch and came out to the same basic scenario).

Shortly after that I installed a home-made Startus Interuptus fix as I later detailed in the SI thread and that has never happened to that bike again (right Jay?).

Was my starting problem caused by the high temp outside or was it just my turn? Does it tend to resolve itself and starts (like mine did) as it sits and cools down?

Heat puts extra stress on poor connections with increased electrical resistance - so it's more likely to happen under heat than in the cold (but it can still happen then).

And 88 is not hot. It'll be 112* (about 125* pavement temp) here in Las Vegas today, and I'm gonna be out riding

Hey everyone, yes, I'm lazy; is this also an issue on new guzzi's like the v7 and griso?  Thanks in advance.

Yes as long as Guzzi continue the stupid practice of powering up the start relay through the ignition switch it will be an issue. You can't expect to get 40+ Amps reliably thru the spaghetti wiring and simple switch.

It happened to me while at the Blue Ridge rally (EV)!  I waived Wayne over, he pulls over, and presto it fires right up.  He believes it was my Karma bell but I up-sized the starter fuse just to be safe.

Manfredo's Stelvio did it on a hot ride home a couple of years ago too. A fee minutes later it fires right up.  SI is an equal opportunity gremlin for all Guzzi models.
