Cali 1400 REAR Tire Change
« on: November 10, 2018, 11:32:15 AM »
2017 California 1400 Tour

Harbor Freight wheel chocks were $59.99 and I had a 20% off coupon (Guzzi content)
I have a really small area and no room for a lift, so this works.

However you do it - stabilize the front-end before jacking the back side.
.
.

.
.

1.  Remove saddlebags.  I also removed the guards.  Remove the mufflers.
2.  With the front of the bike stabilized, jack the rear of the bike up, just enough to take the tension off of the rear wheel
3.  Remove left shock.  If yours has a reservoir, you'll have to remove one shock bolt and slide it away from the brake assembly.
4.  Tape top of left swingarm to prevent scratching it with the brake assembly.
5.  Remove 32mm axle NUT only.  Pull axle out just enough to slide the brake assembly up and out of the way.
6.  Slide a cloth under the brake caliper assembly and use a couple of cable ties to tie that brake assembly out of the way.
7.  Slide axle a little further - just enough - and - remove the wheel spacer - then slide axle all the way back in.
8.  Get a rubber hammer n tap the wheel assembly lightly toward the nut (left) side until it separates and clears the hub.
9.  Remove axle, then raise jack until you can remove the rear wheel.

Ya might want to tape both sides of the wheel (to prevent scratches) in case it gets away from you during the removal process.
.
.

.
.
The splines on this one are dry.  No grease here.  The bike has 6,000-ish miles on it in 5 months, so maybe it didn't have time to get all stuck together.

I used a bit of Fluid Film spray to take care of the rust and then cleaned it all up and coated with Honda Moly 60 grease - but you can probably use any NGLI2 Lithium based moly grease.  hahahahaaaaa or anything else, for that matter.

.
.

.
.
.
Ya gotta remove a lot of stuff - but all in all, this went very smoothly.
All of the fasteners cooperated, and all of it came apart and went back together very easily.

Tune in next time when we pull the swing arm and see what's in THERE !

Thanks, I've got a 2015 tourer and will have to do the tire thing this spring. What size tire did you go back with?

How have you found the Bridgestone 020 in that size for wear?

Dunno.
1st tire change on this one.

The online reviews are very promising.

I always enjoy a good photo tutorial, and this is one of them.   Cali 1400 owners will be thanking you!

On the other hand, it makes me realize how very different this is from changing a wheel on my Triumph Trophy or my Stelvio, both of which I can do in 5 minutes or so on the side of the road with no jacks, no straps, nothing but a 15mm (Triumph) or 17mm (Stelvio) socket, a 14 mm wrench, and a 10 mm.   5 bolts (Triumph), 6 bolts (Stelvio) and the wheel rolls right out of the bike on the centerstand ....

Sort of a primary determinant for me when it comes to "what bike?" decision-making, I find ....

I all, just wondering if you considered the 180 tire when you replaced yours?

I looked at using the 180 tire but didn't really find a lot of information.  There were a lot of things going on at the time and I stumbled on this 200MM direct replacement for $148 (Guzzi content) so that's the direction I went.

YOU should do the 180 tire and then do a nice write-up and let us know how you like it !!!

That was my plan to get a 180 the same height as the 200 factor. Some of the guys here as did this and say the bike handles better. I had planned to use the shinko asi have used them before and found them to be a very good tire. U must say that the original tire is at 5k miles and only looks to be about half worn out, we'll see, I should need a tire about mid summer or maybe a little earlier if I make the Florida trip in May with some of my buddy pals.

At least they're red, white & blue for touring the U.S.    :thumb:
