Gotta Love YouTube for DIY!
« on: July 09, 2019, 12:59:36 PM »
I just changed the plugs on my 2004 GMC Canyon pickup truck.  They’re not exactly out in the open, and each one connects directly to its own coil - no wires.  3.5L - 5 cylinder.  Searched it on YouTube and gave it a shot.  Took me a while, but I got it done for a fraction of the cost a professional mechanic wanted to charge.  I’ve done this on several occasions with other projects, and it’s a great resource.  Won’t have to touch those suckers for another 100K!

So who wants to start a Guzzi repair/maintenance channel?

I agree Cam. Not only will the YouTube videos show you HOW to fix stuff, they can also tell you if the job at hand is one you would rather not do yourself.

I read last week that the biggest You Tube earner is a seven year old kid that reviews toy, he basically plays with toys as his parents video him, he made $22 MILLION last year.

I am about a year away from full retirement, just dabbling with it this past year working part time and I do like to work on bikes, so I thought maybe I should just start video recording my rebuilds, the problem is it won't be a HOW TO video unless those watching are OK with repeating all of my mistakes!

My history is that I usually have to redo half the engine rebuilds because I forgot a setting or didn't assemble some odd part correctly, I do eventually get it right but its not smooth sailing from the get go!

Heck if You Tube would pay me a couple hundred bucks to keep me in gaskets and oil I would be a happy camper.

Me too!  After I got my engine cover all buttoned up I realized I forgot to connect a hose to the manifold.  Off it all came again...

I've used Youtube DIY vids to back up info on repairs.  (home electrical, auto repair, plumbing, installing an engine to make a bike a "real" moped) etc.  Very helpful.

I've done quite a few videos. Working on a bike AND recording it doesn't double the amount of time it takes, it can triple it.

Building up an audience is a full time job, and until you get several hundred subscribers you won't make enough to pay for the air in your tires. I record videos for the exact reason you state, to show people how to not do it and then when I do figure it out, how to do it.

You tube has saved me tons of money keeping my 98 GMC pick-up on the road. Most jobs are way more simple after watching someone else solve the problem.

I always watch more than one video to weed out the yahoo's and their cameras.  Lots of on-line automotive parts companies post "how-to" videos.  Pretty reputable vs. Bubba in his car port.  However, I take it ALL in and decide.  Bubba actually helped me today.

A Youtube video convinced me I did not want to change my own car stereo ...
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

I could do with only YouTube as my television source LOL.

I’ve lost track of the DIY videos that I viewed and I also watch a lot of racing content and frankly it saves a lot of time because you don’t have to wade  through the commercials .

As most of you know, there are channels to sort your content on. For those that like metal fabrication - Wray Schelin’s channel can occupy hours and many pots of coffee.

I love the idea of having a Guzzi channel. Someone start one!👍

Ya, there is so little Guzzi content..  Most vids I find are just a quick walkaround vid for bikes that are forsale. A few out there... but not many

Sorry I don't have the link, but a Breva 1100 owner had posted 2 diy videos on how to remove the quick release coupling on the gas tanks that causes so much grief. Saved me major headaches.

One of the best diy's I've stumbled on, was when I was looking for instructions on how to install a new ink cartridge into my Brother printer. As the Utuber described, most print cartridges aren't out of of ink at all. There is an "eye" sensor on the cartridge programmed to stop printing after "X" number of print jobs. A small piece of duct tape over the sensor eye to stop the signal,,, give it a good shake,,, reinstall and prints like a charm.

I've saved hundreds in printer cartridges, and a fair bit of room in landfills, nice to see the power of the internet doing good for the planet.

I'll bet that one diy video has cost the cartridge companies million$
