When you see a sign in Nevada that says "NEXT GAS 100 MILES"...better FILL ER' UP!! :rolleyes: :shocked:
On our recent 1775 nile round trip run to the NORCAL Guzzi Rally in Susanville, CA, my buddy Mike's BMW R1150GS ran "bone dry" 1/2 mile from Tonopah!!! :rolleyes: :shocked:
Luckily, I still 16 miles left on the Victory, so I motored up the hill, filled 'er up to the neck, and came back to rescue Mike!
Oh...did I mention that I put a Harbor Freight siphon in my saddle bag just before we left? :rolleyes: :shocked: :huh:
A few photos from that adventure. No gas in Goldfield, (14 miles from Tonopah), by the way, but they had electric charger stations for cars. Go figure! :laugh: :grin: :wink:

Is the R1150GS the best oil head GS?
If counting the 1200 Hexhead as an "oil head" it is IMO better than the 1100 or 1150. It has 20+ more HP and is 40lbs lighter.

Must be something about Tonopah, I ran out of gas about 15 miles east after coming down from Wells on the dirt and gravel roads that end up as state road 376. I was carrying one gallon of extra gas having been warned that I likely would not see gas until Tonopah but completely miscalculated the distances travelled, my KLR range is about 450 km plus another 70 or so km with the spare. It was dusk and very quiet, within five minutes a state fish and game officer drove by with a quad on a trailer and two five gallon gas containers! That was in 2014 and thank goodness the last time I ran out of gas, not a good feeling but it could have been real bad had I not made highway 6.

I find my R1150GS nice to ride, although very top heavy when full of gas. I'm only 5' 7" so I find it a bit tiring after a long day ride having to stand on my tippy toes when I stop.

Ely to Tonopah on U.S. 6: 170 miles between gas stops. At least that’s how it was twenty years ago. My 7.5 gallon Concours almost didn’t make it, though I was running quite a bit over the speed limit.

I carry a liter bottle with gas in it for my trips. It seems that every state I visit has one 100 mile between gas stops legs. I remember when I picked up the V11 Rosa Corsa, California to Minnesota, one of the stops I was counting on in Nevada had a gas pump fire so the station was there but no gas.
I've also made a mount for a Rotopax on the V11 Lemans. it's a boy scout thing and I hate walking for gas

Happy Valley-Goose Bay to Port Hope Simpson Labrador is 251 miles between fuel stops. In between is a whole lot of nothing. The GS I took traditionally gets 240 mile per tank (20L/5.3gal). When I rolled in to Port Hope Simpson the fuel counter had 3 miles to empty. When I topped up I drizzled in 5.9 gallons. Not sure I had 3 miles before i was pushing.

Always have the bike with the most range in the group so you are not the one who becomes the subject of the campfire jokes. LOL!
Considering two of my bikes can only go 100 miles between fill ups and the roads I ride with them never pass by a gas station, I have had to invest in a RotoPax Fuel Cell, and the rack to carry it.

I would say traveling across Nevada, one or both of these items are very handy to have on hand...

Sometimes, one has to ride across large, open, expanses of real estate like this, to get to one's final destination, and the Sierra Nevada's of northern California was worth it. :cool:
Crossing Nevada, I saw a sign that read: "OPEN SPACES MEANS PEACE OF MIND" There is something alluring about these vast, open areas...just mountains, clear skies, and wild burros! :thumb:
Anyway, for this trip, I am glad I chose my Victory Vision, instead of my Centauro GT. :wink:

100 miles don't scare me and the 8.5 gallon tank on my Stelvio NTX. I did a run a few weeks ago from Paso Robles to Ojai. Given the route (58 East, through Carizzo Plain National Monument, then 33 South) it was 160 miles without seeing a gas station. Got lunch in Ojai, but not gas, because I still had a lot.
A while back, I rode from Baker, NV to Caliente, NV (140 miles). Stopped for gas there, just to have something to do. But pretty sure I could have made it all the way to Las Vegas (300 miles) without stopping. The Stelvio will run 45MPG all day long on the open road. I saw a few riders with gas cans strapped to their bikes, and just smiled atop my gigantic gas-camel.
I like the idea of carrying a small siphon. Though if it's on my Stelvio, I'm pretty sure it will only be to remove gas for others.
Why was that big GS so thirsty?

I did that route 3 years ago but the other direction. I was on the Harley 110 I had at the time. I ran at 80 mph most of the way, made it with about half a gallon to spare. Harleys are actually pretty thrifty considering the size of the engines.
Last summer returning from the Broken Arrow rally I ran out of fuel with my Audace. I plead not guilty as the manual says the tank holds 5.3 gallons. When the fuel light comes on it takes 3.4 gallons to fill it. I did the math and figured I still had quite a few miles to go before empty, not. When I filled it, it only took 4.7 gallons, WTF. I have since found literature that lists the fuel tank at 4.7 gallons. Go figure, do not necessarily trust Guzzi manuals.

We don't know if the big GS was thirsty or already had some miles on that tankful prior to heading out.
My 1200 in general get around 44 MPG but running at highway speeds 70-80+ in headwinds fuel economy drops to 39.8 mpg. That still equals out to 210 mile range on a 20L tank. The GSA with a 30L tank would do 310 miles and still have a bit of fuel left if riding two lane 340 miles was easy to get.

Both my Victory and Mike's R1150GS averages about 45 MPG...so we should have known better... :wink: :thumb: :cool: :boozing:

I took this pic yesterday at the midpoint of our 240-mile ride from Phoenix to Payson and then some. Our Vespas are not quite a decade older than the other two, at less than a year, and needed the extra half gallon to get back into town. I've not had to top off Anni yet.

Many years ago I was riding at night thru the mountains and valleys of Nevada on my way to a remote part of Oregon. I was riding my VFR and it didn't have great range. After topping off the gas tank in a small town I took off and after riding for about 70 or 80 miles, if I remember correctly, I saw a sign in my headlights that said it was way over over a hundred miles to the next gas. I knew I wouldn't make it. I turned around and rode back to the station that I had left. I was coasting down every hill and trying to ride as economically as I could with that bike. I still ran out of gas just short of the station. After filling the tank the attendant asked why I was back, and after explaining the attendant said well I could have told you how far it was and they wouldn't have gas anyway because they close early. Thanks. I had chatted with the attendants before leaving and they knew my destination. Hmm. I found a different route and arrived right as I was supposed to time in for work. I knew I should been riding my K75. That thing had some range.
I really like riding in Nevada. Just something special about it.
The next season the boss got me a Cessna 182 to use as a commuter as he didn't want me to get taken out by a deer. That was nice.

Many years ago I rode through Tonopah and neglected to follow the Adv rider code, "Thou Shalt Not Pass Gas". Looking at my map I thought Warm Springs looked like a likely spot to find gas, as many of you know, including myself now, there's nothing there but a boarded up building. So I headed east, coasting down even the slightest grade with the engine off, past all the "You Will Be Met With Deadly Force" signs, and made it to Rachel where I got me some good alien gas. It was a memorable trip.

Yes Tonopah is not the end of the world but it is near the edge and and you can see it from there. My wife's best friend grew up in Tonopah. I've had dinner years ago in the hotel, it was excellent and unexpected in such a remote location. I like Nevada a lot but Reno is no longer the country's "Biggest Little City."

This is the SECOND time we have stayed in the historic, restored, MIZPAH Hotel, ("The Jewel In The Desert"), and it is a wonderful hotel!
The Saloon, and the food / service at the Pittman Cafe restaurant is excellent as well. Thumbs up all around...and no, we did not see any GHOSTS...including the famous "Lady In Red!!" :laugh: :grin: :thumb:

I just went on a 600 mile run. 6.5 gals and was averaging 53 MPG on my 1100 Breva.. Kind on makes may Rotopax 1.1 (true capacity ) unecessary. Unless I am riding with a BMW.. :evil:

Cape Crawford to Barkley roadhouse Northern Territory Australia.
398 km with absolutely nothing in the way of fuel or water between them.
Needed to carry fuel for that leg.

Never been to Australia, but they say the "OUTBACK" is similar to the American Southwest...only 100 times bigger!! :shocked: :rolleyes: :huh:

Kinda strange, driving across Nevada is almost painful but riding across is an adventure. In my opinion anyway. Can see more and the scents are awesome.

That reminds me for the first time in decades I recently had to use reserve on the T-3 and thankfully it still worked.
