Hi all,

The GF 7 I are planning a 4 day trip to Savannah at the end of Feb.  Any tips, places to stay, must see sights and place to avoid?

GF 7?   My gosh, you have to NUMBER them?

You're sailing pretty close to the wind, guy, you might not make it to Savannah ....

That aside, that's a good destination for this time of year ... lot nicer weather than most of us are having.   Hope you have a good time ....

First thing I would do is check out the Waterfront Association's calendar for the dates that you will be there.  The Waterfront will be your main attraction.

I won some money on that casino boat they have so I'd have to go try to give back to them but that's just me.

Tybee beach is a touristy spot but I always enjoy it.  Hilton Head is an hour away if you want to go upscale.

I've always wanted to go the Mighty Eighth Air Museum but never made it:  http://mightyeighth.org/

Just walking the old streets/circles or maybe doing the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil tour is an easy bet (maps available).

I go there a couple of times a year. Go upstairs in Kevin Berrie's Pub on River Street. Sit at a window, and watch the ships going up and down Savannah river while drinking a Smithwicks or three.
If the weather is good, it can be crowded on the weekend. If you are looking for a quiet place, head an hour south to Jeckyll Island.

Teresa and I try to make Savannah yearly for the Music Festival.
We like East Bay Inn for accommodations (Melvin the Bell Man will treat you right).
Favorite restaurants are Alligator Soul (try the Kangaroo - really), Garibaldi for dinner; Pink House is touristy and pricey and long waits but OK otherwise.
For lunch any number of places along the river.

Definitely a walking town.

Have fun.

If you make it out to Tybee, the Breakfast Club is must eat for breakfast.  Tybee Island Social Club is good for lunch and dinner and Huc-A-Poos seems like a Pizza Joint/Roadhouse/Treehouse blown ashore after a big storm (in a good way).  I would imagine few crowds and good rates on the beach in late February.   Have fun.

Different strokes for different folks.  Back in the day Savannah was only a two hour ride and a favorite visit.  Then Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was published.  Been back one time since the book was published and "the real Savannah" was discovered.

Last time Mary and I were there we stayed at the Dunes on Tybee. Reasonable price + some rooms have kitchenettes. Byo pots and pans if you like to find local seafood. Stingrays next door. Have fun exploring.

Most of Savannah, as is Charleston, is owned by folks from afar.  Nothing more discussing than some "Yankee"  cooking grits.

Were they from "South Joisey  " ? :D Around here we mostly have pizza joints owned by Persians and Greek restaurants owned by folks of Lebanese descent , although they are actually not bad  :D

It's not that so much.  A good bowl of grits cost about $1.oo to $1.50 unless you go to down town Charleston and now you are talking $9.95.  ;D

We enjoyed a walking tour of Savannah, such as this one: http://www.savannahrambles.com/ loved hearing how Oglethorpe laid the town out. Too, Ft. Pulaski is a short drive east and is quite interesting, if you like history of the Civil War, fortifications, and technological advances (the bombardment of the fort with rifled guns spelled doom for masonry forts).

They dropped a nuke on it too!

Another fun fact is the Air Force dropped a nuke of Florence SC too.  Maybe that's why people "down South" think there's still a war on.

Mrs. Wilkes restaurant is a must do, get there early!!! Not healthy food, but darn good eating..

Be careful of venturing off the main areas, Savannah has some bad crime so don't let the small town look fool you. If its getting late and you don't see any other pedestrians out and about walking you may need to head back towards the tourist areas.

They did, from a B-47, and when the high explosive went off it destroyed a home.   When the owner attempted to get compensation for his loss the government, more or less, accused him of having his house in the way. When you read the story you just have to shake your head.
As I remember the story one of the guys flying the B-47 saw something amiss in the bomb bay.  While attempting to correct the situation he pulled "this" lever and dropped the bomb.  It didn't hit the house directly but landed close enough the High Explosive, use to detonate the bomb, destroyed the home.  Thank goodness, no one was home.

Youngest daughter goes to SCAD so we know Savannah very well.  Fantastic tourist town.  I will recommend going to see some of the old mansions, and grave yards.

http://www.visit-historic-savannah.com/savannah-historic-homes.html

A trip to the beach and lighthouse is excellent.  You can book a boat tour up and down the river to get a different perspective.  The entire river area is very historic, beautiful and packed with some great restaurants.   There is a special chocolate shop, link below.  SCAD has some great art exhibits, all free.  Ghost tours are popular.

If you have time drive north to Hilton Head Island, the beach is unbelievable.

Agree on being a big careful off the beaten path at night.  We have never had a problem though.

My wife and I enjoyed the following:  Six pence pub, Clarys for breakfast, Pinkie masters lounge(divey bar)and the Crystal beer parlor.  We orginally planned to stay for three day, but ended up there for six.  We walked every square and also visited Tybee beach/ lighthouse.  I plan to go back very soon.  Have fun!!!!

This is a very good time of year to visit Savannah.  Summer is just too hot!

The old part of town is really interesting, and the numerous squares have huge live oaks and each usually has a statue of some sort.  The wife and I enjoy the carriage rides, pulled by one ton draft horses and operated by very congenial drivers.  The "ghost tour" where you ride in vintage, open topped hearses, sounds corny but is very entertaining and fun.  Their number is 912-695-1578.  The walking tours are said to be fun also, but we haven't done that yet.  All of the guides we had in Savannah are extremely entertaining.  There are taxis consisting of three wheeled cycles that will take you all over town in a relaxed manner, and the fares are not really set.  I found that by giving them a decent fee they'll take you to a store or other place and wait outside for a reasonable amount of time, then carry you to another spot.

The wife loves antique shopping, and I enjoy a good cigar while sitting outside waiting on her ;)

We like the Crab Shack out on Tybee Island, but there are many, many good eatin' spots around.

If you have a rental car, the city has quite a few parking garages.  However, it's easy to get them confused and "lose" your vehicle.  Just use a GPS or pay close attention to where you parked. ::)

Once upon a time, a real PT boat was operating on the river going from downtown to Tybee.  I would do that again and again, but I'm not sure when it will be in Savannah again.  You might want to check that out.
