Cheap exhaust.....Asking for a friend
« on: May 23, 2019, 01:27:56 PM »
So was curious. Any of my fellow cheap Guzzi hooligans get a set of emgo pipes on a v7iii? Any reason they wouldn't work or otherwise fit? Yes im talking about the cheap ones on ebay?

If anyone else has suggestions on other exhaust 250 dollars and below let me know.

I realize this isnt to everyones taste but being the semi obnoxious person that i am can't help but ask.

Thanks

I put a set of Emgo Dunstall replicas on a Triumph Thunderbird with very good muffler packing wrapping the removable baffle. Still too loud so I went to the local grocery store and bought two packages of stainless steel pot scrubbers that had 3 in each package. I proceeded to stuff three inside each baffle which deepened the sound and tamed it down to a nice level.

I use them on my '03 Bonneville. They're a little loud, but they look pretty good and can be replaced for around $75 should the bike take a minor fall.

If they're gonna cheap out on aftermarket pipes, why not just stick with the stock?

Loud pipes will get the attention of pedestrians and picnickers and other motorcyclist, but  cagers are riding with rolled up windows air conditioning radio blasting, they are not the ones you irritate with loud pipes.

Is it possible to knock out the baffles on the oem mufflers?

Well i think the argument for loud pipes is a dead horse that's already been pulverized. But while im confessing my love for loud exhaust noise and annoying pedestrians....I enjoy bright flashy red, matte paints, wrapped pipes, and long walks on the beach with one particularly beautiful woman.  I know a little low class and probably shocking. I am of the opinion that loud exhaust is as effective as most horns. Noticeable but not to be relied on.

So thank you for weighing in. I enjoy the interchange of opinions but will not pretend my intent behind loud pipes is safety. Though i do think it helps limitedly.

I know the wrapped pipes thing will draw criticism. But if you saw my pipes after 30000 miles of salt air you understand that they haven't long for this world.

I think bright colors can help (once again not much)

I truly believe defensive riding is the key thing.

My two cents worth...

- Loud pipes make noise, I haven't scene any stats that indicate a correlation between decibels and cycling accidents.

- Cheap pipes sound like cheap pipes.  I don't imagine the copycat pipe makers do any extensive engineering to their product.

- The exhaust system mods are just part of the whole performance scheme (maps, jetting, etc.).  OK, you bolt on you noise makers, now what?

- One of my cheapskate HD buds buys himself a set of stock take offs, drills them out, installs them and thinks he's the smart one.  The bike sounds like crap and no doubt performs the same way.

Ever have an an open pipe Sportster fly by you on the interstate, geez, what a racket!!

If it is noise or performance you seek, do the right thing, throw some money at getting good stuff.

Good luck!

They give driver's licenses to deaf people, but not blind people.

If you are doing this for increased safety, then you must also be sporting Hi-viz riding gear, as well as added extra lighting front and back to cover all the bases.    :thumb:

I have to say i understand where you are coming from. But i had a harley before and that sucker was loud. Id say twice as loud as straight pipes on a v7. The v7 has a nice refined level to it comparatively. Its not disgustingly loud just pleasant. The reduction in weight is slight but noticeable. I dont see how restricting the engine to breathe helps.

I think with beetles map the change is quite frankly amazing.

The bike is not annoyingly loud. Its on par with some of my neighbors racier cars.
So i think the argument for it being to much is a little lost.

I respect the right to a different opinion. But i will take my beer money and taste and enjoy it.
Have to say im having fun with the reactions. Cycle on my friends and be safe. The only thing that matters imho
Is riding like you are not seen and good following distance.

But believe me the bike is not as loud as some after market barely baffled or unbaffled harley.... :bike-037: :thumb:

My pipes are not nearly as loud as 80 percent of the bikes I see on the road.

The EMGO pipes are just re-pops of popular stuff from the sixties and seventies. They're loud in the way that most bikes were loud back then, but they still have baffles and packing. The ones on my '03 Bonneville (above) are replacements for the stockers on Triumphs from the sixties. A forum member here has the EMGO Dunstall muffler reproductions on his older Guzzi and they sound sublime.

I have no problem with louder pipes.  If some says i like noise, then  fine.  When they say they do it for safety is when i say BS, unless the are also doing everything else to enhance safety.

I have bought some used bikes with aftermarket pipes and ran them that way.  i have not yet spent money on pipes.  haven't had any rust out yet.

Dusty?

Were any jimmies rustled at Cedar Vale?
I know some panties were knotted.  It was a knot a rally after all.
Maybe that's why we didn't see Annie this year.  She might have heard those jimmies rustling and stayed away.

Those Galveston youngsters (Beowulf and Bigboy) are off their chains and poking fun at us old men, but the first one that calls me an oldtimer is gonna catch it.

Beowulf's bike sounds good.  I can hear him coming so I can hide my beer.
Biggie I'm sure many have heard emgo pipes.  It's your bike do with it as you please.

My jimmies ain't rustled, nor are my panties knotted.

^^^Annie came thru early every morning and jimmied open some food containers , rustling about for victuals . When Marley made his appearance Annie ran for the hills in disappointment at having to share food and attention .

About those overly loud motorbikes roaming the streets of Galveston , keep them there , we have our own supply of de-mufflerized noise makers here, one just across the street .

Hi Dave yes im having fun poking the bear so to speak. Just curious if emgos would fit due to the fact v7iii have what appears to be a doublewall exhaust.

I quite enjoy harassing you and Charlie been learning a lot. I need to bring you some beer soon.

Have to go riding after this summer calms down.
