A. buy the highest octane gas you can find.B. if you dropped 2 gears you were lugging it to death. Keep it at 4000 or above especially in 4-6ht gear.
In the early days of the V7 Special, I had significant grief in mid 40's temps and peak hour traffic. Turned out to be an overfilled crankcase (2.00L is too much), which pushed oil into the airbox - soaked the air filter and down into the throttle body. Cleaning the oil from the airbox, and from down the air inlet to the throttle body (throttle body cleaner & paper towels), a little less oil in the crankcase, & a new filter solved that problem. I don't know if the III is the same, but it's worth checking. Note that the coating of oil in the manifold between the throttle body and the inlet ports didn't seem to affect running - there was still the oil coating there when I removed the manifold recently, some 70,000km later.
