V7ii valve adjust - 1st time!
« on: April 29, 2021, 09:49:23 AM »
Hi,
Just gonna check/adjust my valves, first time for me, always been done at main dealer before during servicing.
My question is this; is there a recommended or commonly used torque setting for doing up the adjuster locknuts?
Or is it just a case of going by feel?
Thanks.

This is probably one of the best descriptions on how to tighten by feel. The adjuster nut, a few fingers tight.

I use torque wrenches like other have state.  Usually on fasteners that hold things together and not on spark plugs.

I do use the human torque wrench settings on the ratchet handle.  Full fist for large bolts, thumb w/index & middle finger for mid size and thumb w/index finger for small bolts.  YMMV.  No full arm strength except on the large ones and what they're tightening on.

Takes some practice and pay attention on the last 1/4 turn of the bolt etc."

I do it by feel.   It doesnít take much, and no, they donít loosen so thereís no reason to gorilla tighten them.

I believe the spec for a BMW airhead was 12 foot-pounds.  Guzzi is a very similar design.

As someone who just did their first valve adjust, I'll 3rd the 'go by feel'.  It's pretty easy to tell for those nuts.  Be gentle with the head cover screws, it's pretty easy to overtorque and strip them.

Thank you gentlemen, it would appear going by feel is the way forward, Iím pretty comfortable with that in the absence of a specified torque. I appreciate all your assistance.

The locknuts on a adj for valves is no more than 6ftlbs, they are tiny.  I use a torque wrench so it's all uniform. They do snap off at 7ftlbs, just so you know what you are working with.

That's about 70 inch pounds for those with those type of torque wrenches

Or about 8 Nm for you metric types.
