V7 Buzzing sound?
« on: May 15, 2021, 04:45:40 PM »
I've noticed my 2014 V7 makes a buzzing sound for a few seconds, and then 5 mins or so later, it buzzes again. The buzzing lasts for 2 seconds or so.  I had a very good look all over and can't find any rodents or a wasp nest in there :)

Does anyone else's bike do this?

This is happening with no keys in the ignition, sitting stationary while parked. The sound appears to be coming from or under the fuel tank or in that vicinity.

Thanks
James

Fumes from fuel tank, often called a moaning cow, all could have a different tune.

+1, mine does that mostly when I bring it inside out of the hot sun, can moan away for an hour sometimes in bursts of a few seconds.

As others have said it's completely normal. It's fuel vapor pressure in the tank. The MGX 21 used to put out what my grandson said sounded like whale song for a couple hours.

When the engine in my Audace was replaced the shop vented the tank directly to the atmosphere. My V7 is stock  and moans after coming out of the garage. My first stop is usually at the post office a couple of miles away. It waits until I come back out and stand the bike up and then let's out a nice long moan. People give me a strange look. I think it is funny.

Thanks for the replies.

This sounds different than gas venting. Plus, it's too consistent  in the duration of the sound. It's a buzzing sound like a bee for 3 seconds, then it shuts off. After a few mins, it does it again for the same duration and it's the exact same sound.

This happens even if the bike is cold and hasn't been running for a few days.

I think something else might be going on.

I did some google and someone mentioned something about a stepper motor on a different model Guzzi.

Does this new information provide any clues?

Thanks
James

Could be the fuel pump buzzing , try cleaning the petcock and replace the fuel filter .

My thoughts too but he said it happens with the key off so I hope that's not it. Hope he doesn't have rattle snakes where he lives!

What are we hoping it isn't is?  The fuel pump?  Would that buzz if the key is out of the ignition or you hoping it's not something else?

I'll start pulling fuses tonight and see what happens

Thanks
James

If it is the fuel pump buzzing without the key in the on position or completely removed, you have a problem. The fuse thing should tell you.

Just checking in to see if you have made any progress?

If you don't have a wiring diagram, it would be worth obtaining one for your bike. Just be certain the one you are looking at pertains to your bike and not a previous of latter model of V7.

John Henry

I took a few of the fuses out last night. No change. Still makes the buzzing. I'll do the rest today.  I'll also buy the hi res wiring diagram from AF1 racing as they have them online for sale (along with the service manual which is nice).

I'll post up my results here either asking for more help or with, hopefully, the problem rectified for future reference.

When you stop the bike lets say at home with the same conditions that make the bike buzz. Try disconnecting the battery ground. Sure way to tell if it's electrical. Then...???

Just an odd thought. Depending on how it's wired, maybe the horn is getting power, not enough to make it beep, but enough to make it just buzz??

This, I’ve had one that did this, switch was dirty.  You didn’t say if it stopped when you opened the fuel tank?

He did say it happens even when the bike has not been ridden. That pretty much rules out the vapor recovery system.

Not really. Not if there is any ambient temperature swing in the garage.

Hey Pacman, did you ever find out what was the source of the buzzing?  I also have a 2014 v7 that is doing what I think is the same thing. The buzzing I hear might be coming from the starter motor. It happens for about 2-3 seconds then repeats about every 30 seconds. As the bike cools it seems to get less frequent and eventually stops altogether.

Just curious ,based on your username, are you in Calgary by chance?

I haven't figured out what the buzzing sound is from. I pulled all the fuses, disconnected the battery etc. I suspect it's what the previous replies suggested and it's my fuel tank venting. It makes sense except how it seems to be perfectly timed at exact intervals which is what made me think it could have been something mechanical going through a loop cycle.

Take the cap off, see what happens.

Thanks for the reply, I'll experiment with the gas tank cap tonight.  The venting sounds logical.  And btw, no I'm not in Calgary I am way down in the US in Ohio.

Well I rode for a while yesterday. Gassed up and heard a slight woosh when opening the cap. After I got home there was no buzzing this time. Seems to be the tank venting as described.   I am considering the carbon canister bypass and see if it improves performance.
