Challenge to the Goose world
« on: October 12, 2021, 11:06:52 AM »
Last I looked there are 6254 total members on WG. Lets say only a tenth of them are active, leaving 625.4 active members. ( The .4 my imaginary friend).  Luap has posted that it cost $3,636.00 a year just to basically run this this site. Anything else goes to improving the site, and maybe eliminating all ads. If every member contributed $100 per year Luap would have $625,400 to work with.  Unrealistic I know. If only the 10% that are active contributed $100.00 years LUAP would have $62,500 to work with.  Imagine what he could do with that amount of capital to invest in this site.
Now I know not every one can drop a C note all at once.  But most, certainly can drop $10 a month. Giving up on Starbucks Crappacino per month is a worthy trade wouldn't you say? On the donation page you can set the donation to be recurring, so it is easy to give $10.00 per month.
Yes the cheapest thing  on a Guzzi is the rider, and some I am sure are telling Elizabeth its the big one at the thought of releasing a $100.00 bill into the wild.  So lets say all 625.4 members recover from the vapors at the though of parting with a hundred dollars; might they consider a $10.00 donation?? At $10.00 USD a piece, that gives Luap $6,250 dollars to work with.  Granted he wouldn't be able to do it from his lair inside a hollowed out volcano, he can still do it basking in the love of his wife.
So I call on who can to give Luap $100 donation, or $10.00 per month, or least chest pain causing, a one time $10.00 donation to do so. Together we can really make WG something even more special, and protect whatever hair is left on Luaps head.
I hereby vow to donate $100.00 next January, and each January until the end.

Dang, if everyone gave that amount, I could quit my job and work here full time, pay the mods and still have a lot of room to improve this thing beyond imagine :thumb:.

Well said, if the 10% active even gave $20 annually that would be a great start!

I don't remember but I think I do $20 a year. I  will commit to the $10 a month. I hope that others will follow suit or at least do what you can.    :azn:

Yep, count me in.
This comes up from time to time and I have had a PM in the past, thanking me for raising it but asking me not to do it again.
It embarrasses the free loaders.

I’m already in for $5 a month and $5 every time Maynard posts a story. $20 a month is a bargain for my first and last check-ins of every day.

As mentioned, I raised this once and supported it on a couple of occasions. It was shot down once by a very active member and again by PM from someone who you REALLY better not wilfully disobey...
But here’s a plan.

If you are prepared to commit in principle to say, US $50 annually, simply post “YES” to this thread under your name and add $50 to the running total.
So for instance if it’s currently at $1,250 bucks, the post will be...
Huzo
YES + 50 = $1,300
Then the next guy posts..(for instance)
V85 Lover
YES + 50 = $1,350...and so on.
After some time it will be an easy task to see what the virtual total is and that will test the worth of the idea. If it looks like it’s going to work, each of the people who posted can make the donation.

I would like a bottom line figure of what it would take for Luap to be able to put his feet up and do nothing but run our forum, if each member donated a set amount.
Most guys would make a one off donation annually if they knew it would completely solve all the monetary issues and Luap could retire to tend the forum...(I would immediately).
But if your donation does not fully solve the issue and only serves to support the free loaders, it breeds resentment. A sort of “I will if he does mentality..”

So to that end, I’ll start..

All, 2021 goal has been met. Thanks. We're good for another year.

As I've said since the beginning. We shouldn't pressure or guilt anyone into donating. That's not the way I want it. I want those who find a value in the board to contribute. We get contribution amounts from $1 per year on up and I appreciate all contributions, regardless.

Any further donations this year will go into a separate fund I maintain for:
Professional American-Based 3rd party support, and consultation.
Improved technical support memberships for when there are issues beyond my control.
    Application research and development.
Domain Administration and Services, so that this domain will be around for a very long time to come.
Maintenance, security purchases and upgrades to keep the site free of malware, viruses, etc.
Software purchases to improve functionality and ease of use.
    Firewall and security protection services.
Software upgrades to better serve both you and I.
Crash recoveries made seamless due to improved backup resources.
    Administrative Labor

Also, I have looked into what it would take to disable ads for donors. That would be a big task and pricey cost to do so I don't know if that'll happen anytime soon. SMF software is friendly until you try and do something it's not been designed for. But, I'll ask some of the consultants I've used in the past about that and see what happens. I would like to implement that feature for sure though.

Thanks,
Luap
