G’day, So dear old Gadget calls to gloat that he is off to the Ragged Fringe Rally. He drops the diamond that the name ragged fringe comes from the description of Guzzi riders in a piece describing the riders of different marques. Does anyone know the work he referenced?
Cheers

I believe the original name comes from the NSW Guzzi club who run the rally it was
the ragged fringe of decent society somewhat correct

Ragged fringe sounds apt
It also is a cult
Fortunately hipsters don't feel they belong

In the spirit of One-Upsmanship, the January 1982 Classic Bike provides an article about acquiring and restoring the Guzzi 500 SuperAlce Military. In that article they write: "It became fashionable for the leftist young and the radical chic to renovate Super Alces, not because the bikes were better than the Falcone or the Gilera Saturno, but because they were available in large numbers at throwaway prices."
Oh yeah! Count me in! I wear the badge.

new york times (or was it WSJ) review of the Cali 1400: if it was any more a cult it would require chickens

I tend to feel ragged often but don't have enough hair for a fringe.
Do I still qualify? :undecided:

There's a contingent coming from WA (Western Australia) once more. They are likely to be a little on the ragged side by the time they get to the site. We shall see Gadget & all those other reprobates there.

I was pretty ragged by the time I got home from last years's rally.
I'm turning this year's trip to the rally into a 2 week biking holiday further north (where the weather is supposed to be warmer).

I didn't make 2017 and now won't make 2018, bugger  To those attending, enjoy :boozing: :boozing: :boozing: :gotpics:

The phrase "The ragged fringe of decent society" comes from an article in a 1980'sn Australian Motorcycle magazine where it was used to describe Australian Moto Guzzi riders.
The Austalian Moto Guzzi riders took it to heart and when the New South Wales Moto Guzzi Owners Assn was planning their first Rally in the early 80's were inspired to name the rally "The Ragged Fringe"

Lest anyone need reminded, the late, great Cleveland Steve routinely supplied said chicken.

Fringe? Proudly. Ragged? No way. We build our bikes to last and ride them, as Hunter Thompson said, “with immaculate sanity.”
-
While the Ragged Fringe may be on the edge down there, it sounds like they are part of a very rich antipodian motorcycle tapestry
