1980 1000SP Wire Wheels

Both alloy wheels on my 1980 1000SP project are bent beyond repair and need replacing. I'd like to put wire wheels on the bike but have questions that endless WG and Google searching cannot seem to answer.

Is there an OEM bolt on solution?

Are there conversion kits? What parts are required to make this happen?

Will my stock F08 brakes be affected? I have a dual disc kit on with single bleeder F08 calipers.

Any help is much appreciated as I'm in a bit of a jam!

If you can get a front hub, the only things that you need to get right are the bearing sizes and the spacing of the discs.
The rest is relatively straight forward. My first post on WG was on this topic, I did the same thing on my Norge.
Your bike is a bit of an unknown to me in finer detail, so I cannot comment on rear wheel issues. But suffice to say, if you can get the hubs in and the discs line up with the calipers, it’s all doable.

Yes, wheels from a T3, Convert or G5. Always best to buy the axles, spacers, washers, etc. with them. Your present disks will work.

Rear wheel parts are slightly different between wire and cast.  The rear wire wheel uses a bearing spacer on the left side that the cast wheel does not.  I spent two hours searching my garage for that spacer that doesn’t exist when rebuilding my SP.

On the rear get a T3, Convert or G5 rim, and yes make sure you get the "sombrero" spacer (and don't install it backwards, always brim away from the center). On the front, the wire wheels and spacers from any of the touring 35mm front ends (195mm center to center on fork legs) will work. You should not need either axle, but the axle spacer (goes between bearing inner race and fork leg nut side) from the front is necessary to center the rotor under the caliper.

Thanks for all the great replies. I'll be keeping an ear out for T3, G5 and Convert wheels. A preliminary search is not looking great. I'm finding a lot of old junk wheels that people want a fortune for, nearly the price of new wheels.

I'm concerned about the front axle however, it's for a spoked 1000SP but states "for width fork 261 mm long." My forks are stock 230mm width per the manual and as measured from outside face to outside face. Does anyone have any insight regarding the front axle? I'm curious if I could use my current axle with the appropriate bearings and maybe having to have a quick spacer machined.

As Mike points out, both axles can be reused and possibly the spacers  in the hubs between the wheel bearings as well .

Alright, so I pulled the trigger and bough the wire wheels from Stein Dinse. Had to do some mental math judo to justify the purchase but the way I look at it, buying a couple of used alloys is going to cost around $750 plus blasting and powder coating for an additional $350. So, for $1100 I can have some wheels that may or may not be in great shape and still likely require work. I cant find a solid pair of used wire wheels anywhere. The only ones listed are grubby and pretty dang expensive. I'd still have to buy flange kits and bearings which would put me near the $1000 mark. With all that considered, I payed $1200 USD to get brand new wire wheels with all the appropriate accessories shipped straight to my house. This, to me, was an absolute no brainer.

Thanks again guys for all the helpful insight and direction. Looking forward to getting this bike done. I had started a build thread in the bike builds section but it somehow got deleted after a single page. Perhaps it was the cat walking on the keyboard again....who knows.

Hard to believe that with the number of old Guzzis being parted the Borranis are that rare and expensive. Oh well. Good luck with the project Taildragger.
