Eldorado Distributor Refurbish
« on: July 14, 2019, 12:05:14 AM »
Looking through Harpers and MG Cycle I don't see new bushes tor the distributor. I have to tinker with the points gap to get it to fire on both, I suspect the shaft is leaning over so it opens un-evenly.
I know the springs are shot.

If I use a timing light it's all over the map.

What do you experts do to the distributor on an old loop, 140,000 miles

Thanks
Roy

I've never needed to replace the bushings. There's no diagram that I can find that shows them as a separate part, so no part number. Best bet might be to remove one carefully, measure i.d., o.d. and length and see if you can match something up on McMaster-Carr.

Thanks Charlie, I will try to get a better idea of how worn it is, I just assumed the bushing would be worn out after all this time.

Could be, I've just never seen it. The shaft itself could be worn too. A customer's Eldo had a slightly bent shaft, don't know how it happened, but it caused running issues.

Try the timing lite at full advance and it will likely improve immensely. There's alot of slop in the entire system especially at idle.

IIRC most problems from the distributor were more of refreshing than a complete rebuild.  Aside from the problem that Charlie said about the shaft being bent.  More of a derusting/clean and lube.  Biggest problems stem from the springs needing replacement.  Anyone can correct.
From the Deep Deep South out in left field.  There are no stupid questions.  There are however stupid people asking questions.  🤣, this includes me.  😉

VG article by Greg Bender. Some of the principles re "blueprinting"  mentioned in the Hagerty article may have merit.. e.g. ensuring that min. advance fly-weight contact positions touch at same time...?

Thanks for posting that Charlie - It explains a lot

There are things I didn't know about the distributor like the felt in between the bushes
I put in an order for new parts.
