Griso vs V11 Sport
« on: February 14, 2020, 08:29:05 PM »
I had a 2003 V11 Sport a few years back and really liked the bike minus the flaking engine paint. How’s the Griso compare. There are a few new Grisos left priced pretty well.

I had a 2001 VII Sport, it was a great Machine
I now have a 2007 Griso 1100 2 Valve. its a more refined bike, the riding position is improved, its more of a cruiser.

As you can see I have both.

The Griso more refined? The engine is, the gearbox is, the suspension is a better set up to begin with. Ok I'll concede that.
I've never though of it as a cruiser though. Keep it above 5K and it's a hooligan

I bought mine cos I realised it's all subjective and you won't know if it speaks to you till you ride one.

My advise; the prices are ridiculously low for what you're getting. Buy one. Ride it & see for yourself. I doubt you'll regret it.  :thumb:

Perhaps I should have called it a tourer, I took mine to the Arctic circle then down to Salt Lake 2 years back about 12,000 km in less than 2 months
I do have a Corbin seat though, I wouldn't like to do that on the stock seat.

Just the regular soft bags, a small top box and two 1 gallon cans perched on the passenger pegs, a Lexan cover over the headlight and a rock stopper wrapped around the sump. The Dempster highway is 400 km of rough gravel with no gas.
Bob Burrows I went with rode a Supertenere a much more suitable machine.
The only other Guzzi up there was a guy from Alberta with a Quota Tug (name slips me at the moment) Seen here later in Vancouver
https://image.ibb.co/jPg7xe/IMG-0819.jpg

Bear Glacier on the way to Stewart / Hyder

And another past Hyder back in British Columbia

Mehan Lake just past Meziadin Junction A local pointed this out to us otherwise we would have missed it.

Start of the gravel

400 km later at the Circle

Got a bit dirty though Note the rubber matting around the sump, from my mining experience rubber deflects rocks better than steel plate.
We parted company on the Dempster its so much better to travel alone and just touch base every hour or so, the Tenere could soak up the bumps much better than the Griso

Next day we rode from Dawson City over the Top of the World Highway, parts of that were really rough, by the time we got to Chicken Alaska I had no oil left in the rear strut,
had to travel all the way back to Vancouver with no rear damping. The tires I am running are Heidenau.

Have to admit, a Griso would not be my first choice to tour Alaska on.  Talk about "run whatcha brung" kind of trip.  Still, if it got you there and back, it did it's job.

I own a Sport and have ridden several Grisos.  I like the looks, sporty handling and torque of the Sport.  The 8v Griso has more top end and stronger engine and better gearbox.  The ergos are pretty close on both bikes, both could use a little more leg room for touring.  I've ridden one Griso that had squared tires and it was handful, so look at the tires before making a judgment.

So far as a touring machine goes, the Norge has a lot going for it for comfort and performance.  Styling is subjective.  Haven't ridden the Stelvio but it's probably in the same category.

Loved my V11 Tenni, wanted to love the Griso, but unless I slid my ass way back in the seat, my knee hits the cylinder head.

I'm "properly sized" for the V11S and the Grease O. I put a lot of miles on a Centauro, which is closely related to both. Of the three, the Grease O is more refined. It's just an updated Centauro, IMHO. The V11S is the last of the *real* Guzzis.   More visceral than the Grease O. All will tour just fine, thank you.. and are competent enough "sporty" bikes when you hit the twisties.
John mentioned the Norge. It's by far a better sport Touring bike rather than a Sport touring bike.

Oh and mentioning touring, I've ridden my V11 Sport from OKC to North Carolina and several trips to Austin and Arkansas.  I've HB carriers and some big JR bags.

I should have mentioned I have lowered pegs by Knight Design, they made all the difference.
