Congrats to you, my friend, I was again a few hours late.

But also thanks to SDCR for the posting, it's brother's like you that create visibility to gems like this when they come up. Snagged my '71 Ambo "Police" project that way, although I was willing to GLADLY pawn that off on some other pigeon to wheel away this SP.

Well it up on the lift with the gas tank off trying to dignose why one coil isn't firing.

Both Dyna coils Ohm out to 3.  The resistance through each plug wire to the cap is close to the same 4.4. and 4.7 ohms

Wiring seems to be correct at the coils still no spark at the left cylinder.

Green from the dist to the + of left cylinder coil.
Red from the dist to the + on the right cylinder coil.
Blue/black jumper from negative on left cylinder coil to right coil negative.
White ignition wire to negative on the right cylinder jumpered together with the blue/blck jumper

Right cylinder coil (have spark)

Primary side 3.4ohms
Plug wire to + on primary side 14.2 kilo ohms
Plug cap to + on primary side 18.9 kilo ohms

Left cylinder coil (no psark)

Primary side 3.5ohms
Plug wire to + on primary side 14 kilo ohms
Plug cap to + on primary side 18.4 kilo ohms

Points and the left cylinder (green) were totally shut. Opened them up to 016" and reset the right side as well as they were about 018" hit the starter and the SP1000 is now gone from a non-runner, partial runner and now runner.

Its still dies when the chokes are released so later today a through cleaning in PineSol is what the doctor has ordered. Other good new is I slipped it into gear while running and the rear wheel goes round and round w/o any strange noises :thumb:

I saw the original photos in the CL ad (I was a few hours too late....), and Perazzimx14 should be ASHAMED of himself, even if he gave the guy full price.  :azn: A bike in that condition could not have had anything significant wrong with it. I vote it as the SCORE-of-2019, even though it's only January, waiting to be out-done.

The seller mentioned in the ad that he had other "modern" bikes, maybe he had no idea what points were??

This has been an interesting thread!  Way to go with bringing it back to life!   Sits in guy's garage for ages ... Perazzimx14 gets it running in a couple of days.   :thumb:

Are you planning on doing normal maintenance and checks and then rack up some miles?  Or are you thinking of some sort of restoring work?  It looks great in the pics.

If you are a member of ADV Rider here is a link to the previous owners trial and tribulations trying to get the SP up and running.

https://advrider.com/f/threads/borrowed-trouble-a-guzzi-story.217874/

The seller now has a Stelvio.

He spent about about a 11-1/2 yeas on/off fooling with the SP and I guess it was finally time to let it go.

I'll read the ADV rider history because I like that kind of stuff, but can you be a spoiler and tell us that within those 7+ pages of entries, did he ever set the point gap?

On post #34 someone mentioned to check the point gap, and he replied that he hadn't "checked the timing, it ran when parked...".

The .018' gap might have been necessary to get both cylinders timed correctly. Sometimes it's necessary (unless the points plate is modified) to "fudge" the gaps. Check the timing, you might find it's not even close at the "correct" point gaps.

I guess what I'm getting at, is that it is amazing, and I feel heartbroken for the bike and the previous owner, that in all those years of investigation, he may never have done step 1 or 2 in "Troubleshooting a points engine 101" and set the point gap. That almost sounds something like I'D do.

Checking timing is on the to do list.  I have no idea how or why the previos owner had the points for the right cylinder set where they were.

Its harder than not to start in the middle and not at the beginning when troubleshooting. Heck even yesterday I posted about the coils checking out but still no spark. As soon as I took the cap off the distriburtor and rolled the motor over it became as obvious as the bike sitting before me. I know better and should have started at the distribrburtor and worked towards the coils.

You're kidding.  Nobody bought that gem last summer?? Same price?

For all I know, it could have been 10 min from me also and I wouldn't have seen it, except in one of my random and sporadic searches. Is there some way to establish an automatic daily scour of nearby CL ads to alert a person?

That ADV Rider history is really interesting to read, now that we know the source of the single-cylinder spark. From a later post:

" just spent the day in the garage with the Guzzi, to no effect. It still runs crazy rich, belching sooty exhaust, backfiring, and basically "running" on one jug. The carbs have been cleaned. The floats--as far as I can tell--are adjusted correctly. Throttle cables are new, and adjusted correctly, or as correct as I can make them on an engine that doesn't run.

Tomorrow I have other plans. Monday I will turn my attention to things electrical. I know even less about electrics and timing than I do about carbs. I do have a timing strobe though, and will put it to use (as soon as I learn how).

:baldy
"

With the backfiring and running on (1) cyl, the author and contributors are still focused primarily on the carbs, valves, and fuel. I am trying to learn something about troubleshooting thought processes for use the next time I run into similar problems. Good read.

From the ADV Rider thread. ?

Very nice bike.

I assuming the threads were repaired. Prior to finding the thread on ADV Rider I had both plugs out and they both tightened back up.

Worked on the SP a little more this morning. I spent some time this morning gapping and setting the points at static timing and the bike starts much easier and takes fuel when given throttle like its supposed too. I took it out for a maiden voyage down the street and there is sill some backfiring/bog at 1/2 throttle but after or before that throttle position it runs decent. At some point I need to make a piston stop and verify TCD is correct on the fly wheel. Maybe later today if I get ambitious

I have a couple of boxes goodies in transit one being a Dyna III so I'm not going to invest a ton of time on the points at this point.

Its been probably 3 years since I rode a carbed big block and I forgot how agricultural the transmission was

It was nice to hear the music pouring out the Bubs :thumb:
