Ammunition Depot
« on: January 11, 2018, 02:08:52 PM »
Info for the shooters.  Not everyone reloads.  I use to reload but some ammo you just don't.  9mm, .556 and 22LR's prices look good.  (grammar is off but do you want cheaper ammo or do you want good grammar?)

Bulk 9mm 1000 rds. for $199.

TargetSportsUSA runs about the same prices for 9mm, .22LR, etc.    $.05 a round for .22 is good for these days ....

Probably the difference would be shipping and/or supplies.  Shop away.

I can do better than that reloading. Of course that means I have to mine and clean my own brass. I could do a *lot* better if I molded my own boolits, but I haven't done that since I used to shoot competition bench rest and hand gun black powder stuff.

I know that if one is reload their own ammo, it's less.  The caveat is the cost of the shells, bullets, powder, primer and related time to do the work.  If you don't have the time then of course it'll cost more.

I've actually had good luck with the same or lower prices at Dick's Sporting goods, aka Field & Stream retail stores, especially when they're running buy 1, get 1 50% off specials, which is often. Dick's also consistently had .22s during the shortage a couple years back, at normal, reasonable prices; CCI Mini Mags now sell for $7.99 a 100. Gander Mountain was also a good source until they closed their local stores. That said, Ammunition Depot looks like a good source for factory mags and cases at great prices. I need to measure the new shotgun and a couple of rifles I recently inherited from my late father to see what might fit what.

The big expense is lead, but even buying bullets, I make 9mms for less than 10 cents a round. 9mm brass is practically free, primers around 2.5 cents, and a $17-22 pound of powder goes forever at 3.4 grains per load.

Yep.   Sort of like burning your own charcoal to mix with saltpeter and sulfur to make black powder ....

I topped up with 1000 of 9mm yesterday, the local shop sells 115 gr FMJ in Sig, Federal and a few others, all $250.00.

I sold my reloading gear a while back when we moved as I was no longer competing-so I'm content with that price, no shipping involved but a bit of sales tax.

Lead bullet casting is very rewarding.   Yes, it is messy.   And it is hot, so I only cast in the winter.

But it allows you to create the exact size and type of bullet you want.

Accuracy is largely a matter of finding the bullet diameter and hardness the firearm likes.   By casting, you can control those variables.

For example, in my experience S&W revolvers really want a fairly heavy, fairly soft bullet with a 0.359 inch diameter. Hard to find that from commercial casters.

Another example is my winter project.   My goal is to create some wadcutter bullets for a 7,65mm Swiss Luger.  Yeah, that experiment may not work, but if it does, how cool would that be?   But obviously there is no store bought wadcutter ammo for a .30 Luger.  Gotta cast.

And its cheap.    Did I mention cheap?

I cannot imagine a wadcutter feeding in that weapon. Maybe, just maybe a semi-wadcutter, but I will be interested to hear the result!

I've been using TargetSportUSA a lot lately. I stocked up on the 9mm Federal American Eagle that had the 25% rebate so 1000 124g 9mm was $160 delivered. Kind of a hassle cutting off the bar codes,  but worth it I think. When I used the specialized search engines for ammo prices, other places looked good, but shipping can be a killer. YMMV

Yep. If you happen to be a member of a certain site like this one (and know the secret handshake) a couple of boolit manufacturers will ship for free. Not ammo, though.
