Got to call 911 for a rider yesterday
« on: April 07, 2021, 01:21:10 PM »
Was riding the backroads of Mason County, WA near Tahuya, Dewatto and "The Great Bend" of Hood Canal when I came upon a guy with his bike on the side of the road. He had just wrecked his Ninja 650 and was badly injured. Scraped most of the flesh in about a 3" wide patch off his right kneecap, right down to the white cartilage. He said he thinks he broke rib(s) too. He had managed to stand his bike up, but lay down and rolled around in agony while I was there. No way could he ride 2 up with me to the nearest town about 20 minutes away. I asked him if he wanted me to call 911. I took one look at his knee and said I would. Very little blood due to the lack of blood vessels over the knee cap, but the raw innards were pretty scary to see. A few minutes after I called an older man and woman showed up in yellow vests with a Stop/Slow sign and a walkie talkie. They said an ambulance was on the way and took over looking after the guy. Before they got there I tried to keep him talking, to see if he was coherent and to prevent him from passing out from shock. He said he didn't know how fast he was going, but after walking the road to see why he might've wrecked I concluded he low sided, probably from locking up his rear wheel. No doubt was going too fast around the curve. There were gouges in the asphalt and long white scrapes where his plastic hit.

I was going along at a good clip prior to this, with my GoPro camera on. Went a bit slower after encountering him. Here's a short video of a spur road I did that day:

Ouch, that hurt just reading your description. Hope he pulls through OK.

It is a risky business.

Proving once again that ordinary denim jeans are not proper riding gear.  Jeans resist abrasion only slightly better than panty hose.

Only have had to deal with something like that once and that is enough. Only noticed because the sun reflected off the wrecked bike's mirror well down in the woods on a decreasing radius curve in NW AR. Significant injured person (Won't say rider because he turned out to be a drunk youngun that had talked a friend into letting him take out his sport bike at a party). Took 45 minutes to get an ambulance. That was a long, long time.

Calling 911 definitely takes the shine off of a ride.

I used to ride with a group of friends in the Air Force.
After the 2nd crash, I decided I wouldn't ride with those
guys any more, and have been largely riding by myself since.

It sounds absolutely horrible, elitist, smug, etc. to say, but a lot
of folks on motorbikes are just not very good riders. (Not that I'm
the next Hailwoood or  Rossi, either!)

On the plus side, motorcycle education has improved by leaps and bounds
since I learned to ride in the 1970s. Newly licensed riders at least have a
basic tool kit to work from - which I'm certain has saved lives.

That made me wince just reading about it since you are just down the road from me and this is my riding area too.  Not preaching at all - just riding confidently scared and always wear ATGATT no matter the weather. Almost all MC accidents are very unforgiving.  I hold my breath as in town riders in shorts and sneakers on scooters and MC's ride by on the unforgiving road that gives our tires traction also shreads unprotected body parts.   Hope he is recovering well and learns from his hard lesson.  Thanks for stopping as any of us good citizens would do and render assistance.

Made me wince too, but thank you for posting it.  And thank you for stopping and sticking with the guy!  Reminds me that the first thing to hit the ground is often the knee.  Ouch!
