Title: SoCal Scura rally
Post by: Chuck in Indiana on December 23, 2015, 07:02:42 PM
Ok, Three Guzzis in the same area qualifies s a rally. Three Scuras is probably a Historic Occasion. (!)
Here's the (very loose so far) Plan.
Sometime between Christmas and New year, there will be three of us roaring around in the Santa Monica mountains. I know Richard Rodriquez has/had a Scura in this area (he'd leave us all).
Anybody else?
PM me.. I'm going for a reconnoiter tomorrow to get an idea of time.

Hard to say. That place that stores places and faces in my brain took a pretty good shot when I was a pup. Unless I see someone regularly, it's like I've never seen them. <shrug> Don't recognize any of the bikes, though.  They all S.D. guys?

For many years (decades) there's been a New Year's Day run in the Santa Monica mountains. Originally organized by the late Phil Hill. Leno is out every year either in a car (old Bugatti last year) or motorcycle (he was on a Vincent Dark Shadow in 2014). Always fun, and many rare vehicles.

Ok, there's a Union 76 station at the intersection of the PCH and Sunset. That's a couple of miles or so after the 10 dumps off on the PCH. I'm thinking be there at 10 on Monday. Wx forecast is for no precip and a high of 60.
Sound ok?
Tim, you mentioned Tuna canyon..

I understand it was built as a way for people that lived on top of the hill to take to get away from a forrest fire. <dunno>  We'll do it as the last road of the day. It's constant left right left right, and sometimes makes me motion sick if I go very fast.  I'm getting soft in my old age.
(http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c294/elwood59/20151224_134637_zpsntdnvkub.jpg) (http://s29.photobucket.com/user/elwood59/media/20151224_134637_zpsntdnvkub.jpg.html)
It's one way, about a lane and a half wide. I'll meet you at the bottom..
I was going to show you Yerba Bueno, but the road surface has deteriorated way beyond being fun. Used to really like that road.
At any rate, we'll do about 100 miles or so of twisty goodness combined with some scenic stuff..

That mix of sporty and scenic sounds FANTASTIC. I'll do the 100 miles of slab from San Diego in the morning. I'll be ready to roll away from PCH/Sunset at 10am. Eager to try the new-to-me roads - have only done a few in that area.

Who else is joining?  I suppose anyone who appreciates Scuras can join the Scura rally.

I'll post it on V11LeMans.com too.

You lot are a bad influence on me. Scura, Le Mans, V11 Sport etc. is getting really tempting.

I remember that ride and the laborious taking of that image. I was about twenty feet to the left of the Le Mans lineup with the Guzzi fat girls (Bossa and Jackal)

[radguzzi], what kind of bags are on the Jackal in that image ?

I doubt I'll catch up to this next meeting, but I've been around that neighborhood before - it's a fun place.

It was fun chasing those guys - way out of my league, but their exhaust smelled really good, just like the old days.

Hey groundhog,
fI was wondering if Chuck knew any of the Southern-er Cal Guzzi Riders...  Plus I cannot recall all the names from folk I met that one awesome day of canyon riding...

Thanks for the great day and stepping up to be recognized.

 They all S.D. guys?

For the most part, Temecula and South to San Diego...  Bill Ross and ground for sure.  What a great bunch of Guzzi Guys.

My Scura got a bath yesterday - and fluid check, general pre-ride inspection, and snugged up a few bolts on timing chest, which I think was the source of some oil seepage. Also ceremoniously installed a newly flat-black powdercoated part - the metal band around the shock reservoir.

Looking forward to tomorrow - and it sounds like we should add a second date to this SoCal Scura rally - this time in San Diego. I'd be up for early Thursday (New Year's Eve) or mid-morning Friday (New Year's Day).  San Diego riders: any preferences?

I haven't been by Tecate, Mexico for a few months, and if it's not too windy, it could be a nice day to blast up S2 to Borrego Springs, Montezuma Highway, Banner Grade, Sunrise Highway, etc.......

Moto Euro Breakfast Club.  Meets up every Saturday morning at 8:30 usually around Vista or near Palomar.  Lots of very unique machines in that group.  Munch, Vincent, you name it and somebody has one.

We could have picked a worse weather day, but it is what it is. It'll be in the 40s when I leave the beach tomorrow with a 20% chance of rain.

...and the weather forecast says 40% chance of rain at my house by evening. No big deal.

I might be bringing my LeMans to the Scura rally. Been fighting that oil seepage and I don't like the looks of it - it's enough that oil is blowing back onto the rear tire.

New Year's Eve Day is the Norton Club ride up ACH to Newcomb's Ranch, as well as the LA Biker Breakfast and ride up.  If'n you're not doing anything else that day, come join us.

On a Monday?  Usually some folks there from about 11ish on.  Being Christmas/New Years week there could be more, but weather here in the valley is supposed to get down below freezing tonight with the highs along the coast in the mid 50s.

I'll try to make it to Neptune's for lunch.

It's really quite comical that we three Scura owners managed to muster only one actual Scura today. Great day though. Pictures can't do it justice. But here's a scenic turnout in the middle of huge downhill hairpin.

We all got to ride three different V11s today - all with a little bit different personalities. And the Mighty Scura does pack a punch. One of the coolest parts was riding in the last spot and watching two V11s (sometimes my own) carving through the canyons.

(http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m492/timscudder/v11com%20misc%20photos%20posted/SoCal%20Scura%20Rally/IMG_4352.jpg) (http://s1128.photobucket.com/user/timscudder/media/v11com%20misc%20photos%20posted/SoCal%20Scura%20Rally/IMG_4352.jpg.html)

Not so cool - watching a fire truck in full lights come in tight on a blind uphill corner toward my riding buddies... who fortunately both have good reflexes.

Here's 100 miles of Santa Monica Mountains twisties, selected by Chuck:

(http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m492/timscudder/v11com%20misc%20photos%20posted/SoCal%20Scura%20Rally/Screen%20Shot%202015-12-28%20at%206.26.19%20PM.jpg) (http://s1128.photobucket.com/user/timscudder/media/v11com%20misc%20photos%20posted/SoCal%20Scura%20Rally/Screen%20Shot%202015-12-28%20at%206.26.19%20PM.jpg.html)

And we finished up the day with a visit to Todd at GuzziTech with a stunning view toward Palos Verdes view from the shop... and got see a V7 Racer with 4-valve heads. That looks like a good idea to me.

(http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m492/timscudder/v11com%20misc%20photos%20posted/SoCal%20Scura%20Rally/IMG_4360.jpg) (http://s1128.photobucket.com/user/timscudder/media/v11com%20misc%20photos%20posted/SoCal%20Scura%20Rally/IMG_4360.jpg.html)

How's that weather in the Midwset?  Kinda sucked here,  high 30s when I left the beach. A little damp. Sprinkled some. They call that rain here.  I wasn't really comfortable with the road surfaces. Told Scud and Rox to go ahead, I'd be along eventually.. Rox managed to boil the fluid in his rear brake going down Tuna.  Don't need no steenkin brakes, gots a Guzzi V twin..

chuck,
regarding the mighty scura...
i have mike rich stage 2 heads, mike rich 10.25 pistons, megacycle 620 x 10 cam and chromoly pushrods installed in my 2004 cafe sport.
what valve lash settings do you use?
when i first checked the valves, all were tight... i meen some did not alow the pushrods to spin freely!
i set them to .006 int .008 exh...
mike rich said the pushrods make the measurements need to be .002 int .003 exh...
is there any danger leaving them at  .006 and .008?
bike sure seems to idle better at this setting.
what is your take?

I'm clueless, as usual. Mike said to use .002 and .003 on the titanium pushrods. He told me that .006 and .008 wouldn't hurt anything, it was within the realm of a minor timing change. <shrug> I guess you could get it good and hot and check clearance then to see how much they are expanding.

glad you folks had a good ride, I must admit that one of my longest wheelies was on Chucks Scura when I was looking after it for Roper, (made sure it had a sloppage plate)  Once the front came up you could go from first through third with the thing still standing up, then it got to fast to keep going, man that Scura has some punch!

Yep, that's the one.  If you look to your right (assuming you came up Yerba Buena) you can see the house and grounds pretty clearly before you get to the gate.  I'm sure you noticed that the gate uses a bunch of 747 engine parts in and around it.

glad you folks had a good ride, I must admit that one of my longest wheelies was on Chucks Scura when I was looking after it for Roper, (made sure it had a sloppage plate)  Once the front came up you could go from first through third with the thing still standing up, then it got to fast to keep going, man that Scura has some punch!

😳

I haven't seen any MEBC rides posted for a while.  Looking to ride Saturday if anyone is in?  :bike-037:
