19" short peashooters on a V7I?
« on: August 31, 2022, 10:26:32 AM »
Anyone any experience of these? They're an easily (and cheaply) available option in the UK https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330992350580.
I've seen one V7I with them, and I think they look beautifully proportioned for the bike. I would hope they might be a little quieter than a standard 16" reverse cone open exhaust, as they're that bit longer and have a smaller outlet. That might be wishful thinking.. but for that price I might give them a go. I have a 2012 V7 1TB Special, which really wants some.

You may need more fuel in the map if you use them. They look fine though.

Those look to be Emco mufflers although they normally don't come with the clamps.
I've had a set of the Dunstall replica versions on about 3 different bikes over the past 15-20 years and they are still fine. Right now they went to my cousin when I gave him my 2015 V7.
Let us know how they work if you get them.

Thanks for the feedback; maybe they'll be slightly less loud on a small block V7? ..or is that wishful thinking again. I can always contrive to fit dB killers if need be, even just for the MOT.

I put a pair on the wife's 2010 v7 when she still had it and she had compliments all the time about the looks and sound.

I have a set on my V7iii  (from EMGO)..  I did not edit the map, and she is running fine. They are a bit on the loud side.  and if you have shoe with the wrong type of sole, they will leave marks on the pipe that are hard to get off.
got my set for about half the price of your link. (came with clamps and slip on shims) but it's best to re-use the original muffler clamps as they are of much higher quality.
Nothing much better than a Tannat from the Salta region.

Thanks guys. Your wife's looks like the full length Norton style 'peashooter' Twodogs.. around 24" rather than the short 19" version. Still looks good though.. but very Norton!  Alfetta, I got two for around £125, so a similar price, from Classic Bikes over here in the UK; pretty sure they're identical to the one you linked; Taiwan-made, under the Revus/Emgo name among others.
I'll report on how they fair when I have a chance to fit them.

Well I tried one on, fired it up. Sounds great.. but waaay too loud! The construction is such that retro-fitting a proprietary Db-killer is not an option either; the perforated tube actually finishes at an inner end-plate coinciding with the joint of the reverse-cone; down stream from their is empty space not doing much for noise reduction, and not giving any land to attach a db-killer. You get what you pay for I guess! I have read of someone inserting a db-killer at the slip-on/header-pipe junction; but this sounds like it might have rather detrimental/unpredictable effects on performance, being so much further back up-stream? Anyone tried this?

In the end I went for some Armours Daytona 16", 1.5"DIA slip-ons, with removeable db-killers, or 'mutes' as they call them:
https://www.armoursltd.co.uk/product/silencer-stainless-steel-daytona-1-12/
They're an old-school British company, making traditional exhausts in stainless steel at a reasonable price, and of a high quality. However, they're still pretty loud, so those db-killers aren't coming out any time soon!
No bells or whistles: they don't come with brackets, or even exhaust clamps unless you ask. knocked up my own brackets easily enough. Now I need to play with the fuel map; I've already downloaded one from Griso.org, but I need a working laptop to upload it!

I have lived with the Armours Daytonas for a few weeks, and have been struggling to find a map that succeeds in removing the loud popping on the over-run as well as smoothing out the power at low revs .
Also, the volume is proving just a bit much, and the sound quality too coarse.. so when a pair of used Ixil Ironhead shorties popped up on Ebay, I snapped them up at a decent price, knowing I could always sell them on without losing out if they were no better.
First impressions are 'Yay, what a great sound!' much nicer, and no popping on the over-run. So my Armours Daytona's will be going up on Ebay some time soon.
