Title: Whatcha Workin' On ?
Post by: kballowe on July 03, 2022, 07:20:05 AM
This is a 2004 Honda VTX1300 that needs a complete "once-over"

(https://i.ibb.co/F8csV69/20130203-085052.jpg) (https://ibb.co/F8csV69)

(https://i.ibb.co/8Y309PX/008.jpg) (https://ibb.co/8Y309PX)

Of course, the carb needed a bit of attention.

(https://i.ibb.co/84gKqGF/20130212-112006.jpg) (https://ibb.co/84gKqGF)

The wheel bearings were good, but there was heavy pitting on the wheels.
It was 100 grit sandpaper to start and a fair amount of time sanding with progressively finer grit and then a polish.

(https://i.ibb.co/Bqzv96g/Front-Wheel-Small.jpg) (https://ibb.co/Bqzv96g)

How about a little "spin polish" ?    :boozing:

Stay tuned.

Working on this CX here.  Nothing huge, but lots of little things needing address.

Got some great parts from Ben/Scout63 (thanks, man!!) so my bike now has correct rear turn signals, a tool tray and more installed and waiting.  Many new rubber bits have been installed with more pending, new throttle cables with 90 degree adapters added, went through the handlebar switches, new bushes installed in brake & gearshift pedals, tires & another new battery (sold the new battery I had with my 90 Evo FLHTC...) are coming, rebuilding both master cylinders planned for later this afternoon, ….

I’ve been lowering the bridge height a couple thousand’s at a time to lower the strings.
It takes a while due to having to remove the strings before each adjustment.

At 6K Mi. I’ve finaly had it with the OEM Dunlop bias ply tires on my V7/850 ! I bought a pair of Continental R A 3’s a month or two ago . Sooo , that’s this long weekend project . As of this post rear is almost did . Relatively easy , taking my time , I hate having to rush a first time gig . I should have the front done by cocktail time , if not there’s manyana. I’ll try to get a ride report out , biggest improvement to Ride & handling on my MkII was tires . Coffee break over back to work

Trying to fab up a horn bracket for my bike.  I don’t know why mine is missing.  Someone put the horns on the side of the headlamp instead.  Bracket looks simple enough to make.  Used bracket with horns is on eBay for like 50 bucks but I’m cheap! Lol

Putting an aftermarket slip-on muffler on the Pan American...but access to all the fasteners holding the stock stuff that needs removal is hampered by the RH side rider foot peg bracket assy...whose removal requires taking off among other things the center stand. Now I know a contributing factor to the effort getting this thing up on the center stand...compared to the Kawasaki.
On the bright side..haven't encountered any of those plastic rivet things...yet.

Aircraft builders/restorers are another level, but they say the same about Beetle types and they say the same about wheel builders and they say the same about Law Professors and they say…………etc.

There’s at least one of everything here.
But yes, I’ve crossed paths with these types and I’m always amazed. They’re the sort that could build a piano…

I'm with you SS. Chuck is a hard act to follow, good thing is, it's guys like him that raise the bar of what's possible for all of us.  I built an airplane once, it was a cox , I flew it in a circle until I got dizzy and fell down and it crashed into the neighbors fence. Glad it was not as series as an endeavor as Chucks projects. If WG ever considers a Hall of fame Chuck has my nomination.

After I retired I got a job with a very small business overhauling radial aircraft engines. The owner was restoring a Curtis Robin airplane. Everything had to be absolutely perfect. I don't even have any ideas how many hours he had in machining a new bowl for a fuel valve. I knew he would never finish this project. Unfortunately he didn't,  he is now in a long term care facility suffering from Parkinson's disease. My wife is one of his health care people.

We spent the day at home hiding from tourists.  I refit the G5 bag brackets after a rear drive overhaul, solved the SR leaking carb (a few good taps with a screwdriver handle), and reinstalled the pump levers in the Ducati carbs.  Then I grilled shrimp and lamb chops for dinner.  Finally I tried to fix a fishing reel for tomorrow’s early trip and dropped all the parts on the floor. Happy Fourth to everyone.

Lots.

Oil change on the Triumph Trophy SE. Just got back from a 10-day trip from Maine to North
Carolina and back.

Finishing fixing electrical woes on the BMW K75S. Then we have to change all of the fluids,
check the valves and replace the plugs.

Cali 1400 needs a valve adjustment, plugs, oil change, and new tires in 500 miles.

Rocket III needs a valve adjustment at some point.

And all of the above conspired to require new batteries this month......I swear they
talk to each other in the night.

SR500 needs a new oil check valve. I ought to upgrade the oil pump and lines while I'm at it......
I was gonna do this job this past winter, but the dreaded supply chain issue reared
it's ugly head.

And all of the usual work around the house, gardening, wood cutting and splitting, etc..

Tires update . Got them on with the help of my H F m/c tire changer . Not scratching the rims has been a challenge so after some trial & error on previous jobs decided to try wrapping the irons w/cowhide worked great ! Rode about 90 Mi. To scuff them in . WOW , like I rollerskated onto a cork floor . All the small irregularities & jarring , gone . Way smoother. In the last 20 Mi. I gained enough confidence to drag the pegs on both sides ! Nuff said.

Not something I want to be working on! I got a fresh battery for my recently finished Moto Morini 3-1/2, filled the test bottle up with fresh gas and tried to start it, no luck so I went to check valve clearance and the timing by shifting the bike into high gear to rotate the rear tire and ....... the gear shift is stuck in neutral. damn.

(https://i.postimg.cc/bwmQjJft/BE59-C660-27-FE-489-B-9-D98-9-C1-DA64825-F4.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/zyRLCqBz)

No way its going to budge so out came the motor, spilt the cases and spent the better part of the day trying to figure out why it bench shifts but once I join the cases its stuck.

(https://i.postimg.cc/JzrbgXv8/03-A055-A6-6-A2-C-4624-B654-E6-ED2-C0-E11-D4.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/3dq40k3f)

The crank, transmission input and output shafts rotate freely. I pulled out the transmission shafts/gears and just left the shift drum and shifter, the drum is stuck once the cases are torqued up. Using Yamabond to seal the cases is too thin, it needs a paper gasket and a thick one at that. I could get a light into the joined cases through a shaft opening and observe the drum while trying to turn it.

I fitted some spare Guzzi Loop intake gaskets (the thin ones) and torqued the cases together, the shift drum now turns freely with the gear selector, another lesson learned; if the manual calls for a paper gasket use it and don't rely on form a gasket

(https://i.postimg.cc/fTh7cpvJ/EACD71-B9-1-C22-44-DD-88-DA-42-FF55-DBFF1-E.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/jCZJK8mb)

I need to make a case center gasket out of some thick gasket paper, hopefully this will be the last time the motor comes out. Education is expensive no matter how you earn it.

Another lesson learned, check each rotating shaft separately with the cases torqued to be certain free movement is maintained.

If you have a local supplier , either Garlock {the green stuff) or Vellumoid (vegetable fiber) material comes in various thicknesses. An option would be a pump repair shop usually carries it in sheets.

Working on my Cal. Parked it a year ago when I had difficulties bleeding the front brake after replacing the line. Got it bled out now, need to get it running. The battery took a charge so no issues there. Will pull the carbs and clean them, that hasn't been done in at least ten years.

as for me... This bike is the ongoing challenge. One I've not thrown myself at it adequately. Finally finished with the rebuilt linked brakes on Independence Day, and they are wonderful. Engine is all buttoned up. Coils mounted in a manner I'm actually pretty proud of, but...

The headlight and tailight do not illuminate in standard 'running' mode. The headlight flashes bright, and the parking light operates. The taillight flashes when braking. So bulbs are good and power is there. I have to assume I fouled a connection somewhere during the refresh, rather than that the switchgear is responsible? Open to suggestions.

Very odd as every 3 1/2 engine I've torn down (four so far) hasn't had a gasket between the halves, and the three I've built back up haven't needed one during reassembly. All shift very well.

Well, I'm assuming you have all the bolts out, including bolts toward the middle?  Is is glued on? Are you serious?

serious as freakin' heart....  anyway.

I got the oil pump replaced at Don's shop more than a year ago.  So I'm doing a fluid change & tune up.  Of course I drained the oil first and then I tried to change the filter - and I remembered the 4 middle bolts- and it's STUCK, like mallet hit stuck.  Like one piece.  And this one has a spacer so it's three pieces.  And I noticed the "tech" overtightened everything.  I saw his lipstick marks and they were way tighter than I ever put it on.  I'm guessing he got his metrics mixed up with his SAE.

I worked on it in my dirty garage, head to toe with dead leaves, grit and grease, lying on the concrete floor, wishing I had a heavier mallet.  I had anticipated a couple of hours for the entire fluid, valves and plug job, so I saw little need to clean up the place before I started.  And I was pissed.     Then former AMA Flat Tracker Ronnie Jones shows up at my house and wants my vote for County Commissioner, I reminded him that we'd had lunch before and I wasn't part of his political party.. I forgot to tell him he never thanked me after I dropped off that photo I took of him at Springfield. I digress... So....

OK, Don, the shop owner told me the tech (no longer there) used gasket sealer and that he'll take care of it on the next oil change.  Why he used sealer?  There has never been sealer on it before, so why did he put it on?  And I can only hope it's nothing stronger.

yeah, I'm still pissed about it.   And it's been a month.  I could go on... but I guess everyone gets the general idea.  I could use one of Fubar's Coors now.    :boozing:

Maybe black gasket sealer?  If dude used the black silicone-type product called The Right Stuff, you’ll need more than one beer and a little bit of swearing.  That stuff really works.

If it was me and there weren’t any solid or hollow dowels locating the pan into the block (no idea how that bike is configured), I would get out some of my trusted Spider Wire or similar hi test braided fishing line and use it like dental floss to cut/break the seal on all corners as deep as I could between pan & block.  That may help get the pan started enough that you can get it loose.  You can even use a couple of loops of it in place to help pull the pan without typical pry-bar damage.

I use that braided line for lots of non-fishing stuff since my father-in-law introduced me to it during our surf fishing outings.  Think the spool I have in shop now is 30lb test Spider wire from Walmart.  Really tough stuff. It’s saved my bacon more than once.

A prybar wedged between the bellhousing and oil drain plug should pop it right off. The spacer should a nub on it to facilitate doing the same thing.

We'll see.  I botched job could total the dang bike.  I've got 55k miles of filter change under my belt, I would guess 6 or 8 times.  I was thinking the fishing line might work to cut the seal.  I shudder to think about it.....

I thought about fishing line.  Charlie's wedge idea is pretty good too.

I haven't a clue what's glued it together.   I can't imagine why in the hell anyone would do that.  I mean if you take off the pan and see that it's a naked gasket, why in the world would glue the damned thing on?  And I gave them gaskets from my own stash in the first place rightly assuming they didn't have any in stock.

The job list never ends, but for myself the most interesting thing I've been working on lately, is a challenging piece of music,  wwaaayyy outside my wheelhouse, "God We Need You Now" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2pWOD1nk7g

I'm always in the hunt for interesting gospel style tunes and I stumbled across this beauty that was adopted as one of the theme songs for the Freedom Convoy. It's a very powerful tune, but the verses are done rap style by Struggle Jennings, and the chorus' are done by Caitlynne Curtis. I'm no rapper, so I'm doing a style of spoken verse, and I sure don't have the angelic pipes that Caitlynne does. It's been very challenging, making my Low C tuning, finger pick style fit, pushing the timing and chord structure around to make it work for me, but it's a good feeling, as it's starting to gel and work for me.

with you providing new gaskets, I bet dude expected to wreck a glued-on gasket pulling the pan like you do on every 350 or 302 V8….  Then he got it apart and said “huh- look at that.  some idiot forgot to put any sealer on the gasket last time they worked on it..  I’ll fix that”.   No good deed goes unpunished.

Charlie’s prying instructions sound great.  I know you can pry against the installed drain plug on older bikes like mine, but I’m reluctant to suggest that on bikes I don’t know.  I’m trying not to break things like I used to

It's been 100+ degrees around here with a lot of humidity.  Fortunately, there's a 44" door on our walkout basement.  And a radio.  And snacks.    :boozing:

Time to get to cleaning and shining.

(https://i.ibb.co/gR1YSJn/PXL-20220706-175039740-2.jpg) (https://ibb.co/gR1YSJn)

And then there's the service, and a general "once-over"

This is a 2005 Harley Sportster 1200R.  It came from the factory with dual front discs, and single piston calipers.  NON floating rotors.  Squeaky dang brakes !

A set of V-Rod floating rotors and 4-piston calipers were a direct bolt-on.  A larger brake reservoir and handlebar controls came from a salvaged Ultra Classic.

Everything else is cleaned and shined.  The service (s) are up to date and tires are in order.
The lawn is burnt out, and the cars have been washed and interiors cleaned.

I'm looking hard for my next project !

Never worked on a Morini but last year I had to replace the gearbox in my Ducati M900 as it lost some teeth from the 6th gear on the output shaft.
The bike was built with a gasket between the case halves but I reassembled using just threebond, of course the crank preload and gearbox/shift drum end floats needed to be set accordingly and that is done by adding/removing shims on the shafts - do Morinis not have a similar setup?

Morinis do have shims on a few shafts, but nothing too critical - certainly not like a Ducati. Remember the Morini v-twin was designed to be built by semi-skilled workers.

Try a heat gun on that sealer.

Good point.  Since I was dropping the pan, I didn't warm up the bike.  I didn't have a heat gun and after beating on it, I filled it with clean oil and gave up.

I suppose I should apologize for wrecking the thread considering all the outstanding projects.   Sorry.   :embarrassed:

Thanks Clint and LR the cool part for me was finding the breathable , mineral paint as the customer wanted it white like the original chimney. The problem was whoever painted the one we tore down used regular house paint that traps moisture in the brick and over time destroys the brick and morter. Especially with the freezing and thawing we get here. Anyway the right stuff to use is a mineral paint that has a higher perm rating than the brick themselves that allows the masonry to breath. I bought in online from a company called Beek mineral paints. in N.C. water based and brushes on easy like whip cream .

That is really cool, Dave.  I’ll remember that about the mineral paint.

My only cool masonry connection is with some guys in VA who do legit old world recipe lime mortar for period correct restoration work.   They do old mortar, make bricks onsite from proper local materials for important projects, etc.  Real deal Master Mason but Jimmy says “I just like making and laying bricks.”  He took me aside one time to show me the brick shaping/sawing workbench he made from spare pit-sawed lumber during one project.  He said ”you’ll like this- you’re the only one around here that will get it.”  He was right- it was so cool to see real pit sawed lumber that was new & not 150+ yrs old.  He was over the moon to have it.   Sure was great to connect with another guy like that.

That looks great, sir.  I’ve got some equipment waiting for similar attention someday.

Right now while waiting for stone to arrive, I’m doing videos of accurately squaring a rough block of granite by hand with plumb blocks, straight edge and level for my YouTube Virtual Stone Carving Apprenticeship series-

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_1Ai-Hj_MMN-dHVeTqtGRQF-EgBbTAql

This is a traditional exercise to train new people how to handle the tools and produce accurate surfaces, edges & corners.  Great practice and a very sublime result.  Hoping to finish side 4 this morning and side 5 this afternoon.

Then the cubed block will immediately be displayed for 6-8 wks in a gallery show as a piece of interactive realism sculpture entitled Kiku (Japanese for “Listen”).  many people claim or ask me if the stone speaks to me….  No.  It’s a piece of stone.

So this block will provide such people opportunity to listen to the stone themselves to see what it says to them before I make something else from it for next year’s show.  Already have plans for it, based upon my apprenticeship adventure.

I missed this post, great work. I haven't found anyone locally who can do that kind of work on our chimney's with most saying to leave all alone if it isn't leaking. But in extreme conditions like a hurricane they both end up leaking some, but not enough to cause any damage. I'd prefer no leaks.

Foot rests for  hot rod Spyder, delicate structure to mount to and odd angles. Left side is roughed in, now I’m getting the right side to match.

1968 Aermacchi Harley Davidson Sprint 250 short stroke motor

Found a NOS con rod / pin and bearing, case bearings, NOS oversize piston, clutch discs, gaskets, seals and new valve guides for it, I am always amazed at what is still available for these old nails.

I plan on putting it in my 1961 Aermacchi Ala Verde tribute bike instead of the 1965 Sprint 250 long stroke motor that is currently in the frame.

Been repairing a 67 Jeepster Commando over the Fall and winter turning it from the "wagon" style to the pick-up truck model. My "daily driver" so to speak though it's been a long time since I drove anything every day. Poor little V700 watching from there on the sidelines.

2018 Ford F150 pickup truck with 70,000 miles.
New tires yesterday and rear brake pads today.
The local parts store turned the rotors for $25/ea.
Front pads still have 7mm.

Im not going to lie that that is really interesting. Ill be searching rock carving today im sure!

It’s a great exercise to do.

Original block with 5 rough / split sides and one damaged flat side that had to be cut in a different plane-

Several videos later, here’s a pic from this afternoon showing side 6 nearing completion.  Most work has been done with the tools on the stone plus a couple more chisels and my grandfather’s plumb blocks..

Took the time to clean the underside of my bv250 to find a tiny persistent leak…it was the low oil pressure sensor. Parts ordered, joy found, right turns can be made again with out the thought of oil on the rear wheel…

Rolled to 28,xxx miles. Best ride ever for these older legs. Attracts chicks…
